OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring or maintaining a classic Volkswagen, the importance of a high-quality weather seal cannot be overstated. This EMPI Hood Seal, specifically engineered for the 1973 through 1979 Super Beetle, is a critical component for protecting your vehicle''s interior trunk space and electrical system. Over decades of exposure to UV rays, moisture, and temperature fluctuations, original factory rubber becomes brittle, cracks, and eventually fails, allowing rainwater and road grime to seep into the luggage compartment. This moisture is the primary culprit behind rusted floor pans, corroded fuse blocks, and damaged wiring harnesses. By installing this premium replacement seal, you are not just fixing a leak; you are preserving the structural integrity and electrical reliability of your air-cooled investment. The seal is designed to mimic the original profile, ensuring that once the hood is latched, it creates a tight, pressurized barrier against the elements.
The 133-823-731 hood seal is manufactured from high-grade EPDM rubber, a material known in the automotive industry for its incredible resistance to ozone and weather aging. Unlike cheaper universal foam strips, this seal features the correct "bulb and track" geometry required to fit into the specific channel of the late-model Super Beetle body. Because the 1973-1979 Super Beetles (often referred to as the 1303 models) feature the curved windshield and a different front apron design than the earlier models, a precise fit is mandatory for the hood to sit flush with the fenders. This EMPI seal provides the perfect amount of "squish" to allow for easy latching while maintaining enough tension to prevent hood vibration at highway speeds. Whether you are finishing a show-quality restoration or just trying to keep your daily driver dry during a rainstorm, this seal offers the professional-grade performance that Appletree Auto customers expect.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
1. Prepare the Channel for Longevity
Before you even think about installing the new seal, you must thoroughly clean the metal channel on the body where the seal sits. Old rubber fragments, dried adhesive, and dirt build-up will prevent the new seal from seating properly, which can lead to "lumpy" hood fitment or premature seal failure. We recommend using a plastic scraper and a mild solvent to remove old debris. If you find any surface rust inside the channel, sand it down and hit it with a touch-up primer or rust inhibitor. Installing a fresh seal over active rust will only trap moisture and accelerate the rot. A clean, smooth channel ensures the seal stays put and provides the best possible water barrier.
2. Use a Lubricant for Easier Seating
Trying to force a dry rubber seal into a tight metal track can be frustrating and may lead to tearing the rubber. To make the process seamless, apply a small amount of dish soap diluted with water or a dedicated silicone-based rubber lubricant to the mounting "foot" of the seal. This allows the seal to slide into the channel with minimal effort. Start at the center of the cowl (near the windshield) and work your way around both sides evenly. Avoid using petroleum-based lubricants like grease or WD-40, as these can break down the rubber over time and cause it to turn into a sticky mess that won''t hold its shape.
3. Manage the Corners and "Over-Stuff" the Seal
Rubber has a natural tendency to shrink over time as it heat-cycles. When you get to the corners of the trunk area, don''t stretch the seal thin to make it fit. Instead, "crowd" or "over-stuff" the rubber slightly into the corners. This means you should push a little extra material into the bends so the rubber is under slight compression rather than tension. If you stretch the seal during installation, it will eventually pull away from the corners, creating gaps where water can enter. Once the seal is fully installed, close the hood and let it sit for 24 hours to allow the rubber to "take a set" to the shape of your specific hood and body gaps.
