This EMPI Premium Exhaust Header (Part # 00-3100-0) is designed for VW Type 1 air-cooled engines. It is a precision fit for 1300cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc upright engines typically found in the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia. Constructed from 1-3/8 inch 16-gauge mandrel-bent steel, this header is built to improve exhaust scavenging and performance over stock manifolds. The 3-bolt muffler flange is clocked at the 1:00 position, making it compatible with a wide range of performance mufflers and glasspacks.

Strip the Shipping Paint: The black coating found on this header is a temporary rust inhibitor intended for shipping and storage only. It is not high-heat paint and will burn off and smoke during your first drive. For a professional finish, strip the coating using lacquer thinner or sandblasting, then apply a high-quality ceramic coating or VHT exhaust paint before installation.

Proper Use of Copper Nuts: This kit includes copper-plated nuts for the cylinder head studs. Copper is preferred for air-cooled exhaust systems because it resists seizing and is less likely to vibrate loose during the extreme heat cycles of the engine. Ensure you torque these evenly to prevent warping the thick mounting flanges.

Check Muffler Orientation: Because the 3-bolt flange is fixed at the 1:00 position, always mock up your muffler before final tightening. Since the bottom tubes of this header are not flanged, you have a small amount of flexibility during the initial fitment to ensure the exhaust system clears the rear apron and provides adequate ground clearance.
