PRO TIPS
1. Always Verify Rotational Clearance
Even though these EMPI rods feature radiused caps designed to minimize clearancing, you must never assume they will clear your camshaft or engine case automatically. During the long-block mock-up phase, install the crankshaft and rods without the pistons or rings and rotate the assembly slowly. Check the distance between the rod bolts and the camshaft lobes, especially if you are running a high-lift cam. We recommend a minimum clearance of .060 inches. If things are too tight, you may need a small-base circle camshaft or additional clearancing on the case webs. Taking the time to dry-fit now prevents a catastrophic failure later.
2. Proper Torque and Lubrication is Non-Negotiable
The 5/16-inch forged bolts included with these rods are the primary fasteners holding your engine together. To achieve accurate clamping force, you must use a high-quality assembly lubricant like ARP Ultra-Torque on the threads and the underside of the bolt head. Do not use standard engine oil, as it leads to inconsistent friction and improper stretch. For these 5/16-inch bolts, the standard torque spec is typically 28 to 30 ft-lbs, but always check the specific instructions included with your set. If you have access to a rod stretch gauge, that is the preferred method for ensuring the bolt is in its elastic power-band.
3. Match Your Components Correctly
Remember that these are Chevy Journal rods, not standard VW Journal rods. A standard VW rod journal is approximately 2.165 inches (55mm), whereas these are 2.000 inches. You cannot install these on a stock VW crankshaft. When ordering your crankshaft, you must specify a Chevy Journal option. Using the Chevy journal is a pro-level move because it allows for a more aggressive stroke while keeping the rotating mass lighter and providing more clearance inside the case. Ensure your rod bearings are also spec''d for Chevy 2.000-inch journals to match this set perfectly.
