OVERVIEW
In the world of air-cooled performance, heat is the ultimate enemy, and the EMPI Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) Gauge is your first line of defense against catastrophic engine failure. Developed through a prestigious partnership with Smiths Gaugesthe legendary British manufacturer responsible for instrumentation in elite marques like Porsche and McLarenthis 100-600 degree gauge brings world-class precision to your Volkswagen dashboard. Unlike standard oil temperature gauges that reflect delayed thermal changes in the lubrication system, a CHT gauge provides instantaneous, real-time data from the hottest part of your engine. This allows you to immediately detect lean fuel mixtures, cooling fan failures, or ignition timing issues before they lead to cracked heads or dropped valve seats, which are often the death knell for a flat-four powerplant.
This updated version of the iconic EMPI GTV Rally Gauges seamlessly blends vintage racing aesthetics with modern reliability, featuring a crisp, high-contrast face adorned with the classic EMPI logo. Each unit is meticulously crafted in Great Britain, ensuring a level of build quality and vibration resistance that far surpasses generic aftermarket alternatives. The inclusion of modern LED lighting provides a bright, uniform glow for nighttime cruising, while the standard 2-1/16 inch (52mm) diameter ensures it drops perfectly into EMPI dash panels, mounting brackets, or any standard gauge pod. Whether you are running a stock 1600cc daily driver or a high-compression stroker motor, this gauge offers the professional-grade monitoring required to keep your VW''s engine running within its optimal thermal window.

PRO TIPS
1. Monitor the Number Three Cylinder: In the Volkswagen air-cooled engine layout, the number three cylinder (front-left) is historically the hottest because the oil cooler blocks a portion of the airflow from the fan shroud. For the most accurate "worst-case scenario" reading, always install your CHT sensor ring under the spark plug of the number three cylinder. This ensures that if that specific head begins to overheat, you see it on the gauge immediately, allowing you to back off the throttle before damage occurs.
2. Proper Thermocouple Routing: When routing the sensor wire from the engine bay to the dashboard, ensure you do not zip-tie it directly to high-voltage spark plug wires or the alternator charging cable. Electromagnetic interference can cause "needle bounce" or inaccurate readings on sensitive Smiths instrumentation. Use a dedicated grommet through the firewall and keep the wire away from sharp metal edges or extreme exhaust heat to prevent the insulation from melting and grounding out the signal.
3. Understanding Your Readings: Every engine is different, but as a general rule of thumb for air-cooled VWs, a normal cruising temperature should stay between 325 and 375 degrees Fahrenheit. If you see the needle climbing toward 425 degrees, you are entering the danger zone, and at 450 degrees, you should pull over immediately to check for a broken fan belt or a severely lean condition. Monitoring these trends over time will help you identify when your engine needs a tune-up or a carburetor adjustment before a small problem becomes an expensive rebuild.
