PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP

1. Use a Torque Multiplier or Flywheel Lock

Achieving the required 254 to 350 ft-lbs of torque is nearly impossible without the proper leverage and stabilization. We strongly recommend using a high-quality flywheel locking tool (the "Z-bar" style) to prevent the engine from rotating while you work. If you don''t have a massive 3/4-inch drive torque wrench, a torque multiplier (often called a "Torque Meister") is the most accurate way to ensure you hit your target without straining yourself or risking the engine stand tipping over. Remember, an under-torqued gland nut is the leading cause of sheared flywheel dowel pins.

2. The Importance of Red Loctite and Thread Prep

Before installation, it is imperative that you thoroughly clean the internal threads of the crankshaft and the external threads of the gland nut with a high-quality brake cleaner or degreaser. Any residual oil can lead to false torque readings or allow the nut to back off over time. For performance applications, we always apply a few drops of high-strength Red Loctite to the threads. Additionally, ensure you apply a small amount of high-pressure grease or assembly lube to the face of the washer where it contacts the flywheel to prevent "galling" during the high-torque tightening process.

3. Check Your Crankshaft End Play Twice

Never perform the final torque on your gland nut until you have verified your crankshaft end play with a dial indicator. The gland nut pulls the flywheel tight against the shims and the main bearing; if your end play is too tight, you will burn up your thrust bearing within minutes of starting the engine. If it is too loose, you risk damaging the case. Set your end play to the factory spec (typically .003" to .005") using three shims, then perform your final heavy-duty torque sequence. Doing this correctly the first time saves you from a complete engine teardown later.
