OVERVIEW
Precision is the heartbeat of any high-performance air-cooled engine, and nothing ruins a drive faster than a sloppy, uncoordinated throttle response. If you are running Brosol or Solex dual carburetors on your Volkswagen, the linkage is the mechanical backbone that dictates how your engine breathes. Over years of heat cycles and vibration, standard linkages develop play in the joints, leading to "flat spots" during acceleration, an inconsistent idle, and poor fuel synchronization between cylinder banks. This EMPI Twist Style Linkage Kit is designed to eliminate those issues by providing a rigid, mechanical connection that ensures both carburetors operate in perfect harmony. By utilizing a center-pull twist mechanism, this kit provides a linear and predictable throttle feel that simply cannot be matched by old-fashioned sliding or L-bend linkages.
Engineering excellence meets vintage reliability in this comprehensive kit. The "twist style" design is favored by many master tuners because it centers the pull of the throttle cable, distributing force evenly to both carburetors. This reduces the lateral stress on the throttle shafts, which is a common cause of vacuum leaks and premature wear in Brosol and Solex H40/44EIS setups. Constructed from high-quality materials including precision-threaded rods and spherical rod ends, this kit offers the adjustability needed to fine-tune your engine for peak performance. Whether you are finishing a ground-up restoration on a classic Beetle or upgrading your weekend cruiser for better drivability, this linkage kit provides the professional-grade synchronization required to keep your VW running cool and strong.

PRO TIPS
1. The Critical Airflow Balance
Never rely on a visual inspection alone when setting up your dual carb linkage. Even if the rods look perfectly symmetrical, the internal airflow of the carburetors may differ slightly. Always use a Uni-Syn or a high-quality airflow meter on the carburetor throats while the engine is at a warm idle. Adjust the threaded rods until the airflow is identical on both sides before locking the jam nuts. Proper synchronization is the only way to ensure that one side of your engine isn''t working harderand running hotterthan the other.
2. Verify Wide Open Throttle (WOT)
It is incredibly common for VW owners to install a dual carb kit and only get 80% throttle because the linkage isn''t adjusted to the pedal''s travel. With the engine OFF, have an assistant floor the accelerator pedal while you watch the carburetor butterfly valves. They should be perfectly horizontal at full throttle. If they aren''t reaching wide-open position, you need to adjust the cable pull at the center twist block. Conversely, ensure the linkage isn''t "bottoming out" against the carb bodies before the pedal hits the floor, as this can snap a throttle cable or bend your linkage rods.
3. Maintain Your Heim Joints
Because the engine bay of an air-cooled VW is a harsh environment filled with heat and road dust, the spherical heim joints require occasional maintenance. Avoid using heavy greases that attract grit, which can act like sandpaper inside the joint. Instead, use a dry-film Teflon or silicone-based lubricant. This keeps the movement silky smooth and prevents the "notchy" throttle feel that occurs when dirt gets trapped in the linkage pivots. A smooth linkage is the secret to a smooth idle and crisp gear transitions.
