Upgrade Your Air-Cooled Electrical System with the Deluxe 60-Amp Alternator Conversion Kit
If you have ever found yourself stranded with a dead battery after a night drive or noticed your headlights dimming every time you come to a stop light, you know the limitations of the original Volkswagen generator. The IAP Deluxe Alternator Conversion Kit is the ultimate solution for the modern air-cooled enthusiast. Designed to replace the aging, low-output 12-volt generator, this 60-amp powerhouse provides a massive increase in charging capacity. Whether you are running high-intensity H4 headlights, a modern high-output stereo system, or an electronic ignition, this kit ensures your battery stays topped off and your electrical components receive a steady, reliable flow of current. Unlike the old-school generators that barely charge at idle, this modern alternator begins producing significant power at lower RPMs, providing peace of mind during city driving or long highway hauls.
What sets the Deluxe version of this kit apart is the completeness and quality of the components. We don''t just give you the alternator; we provide every single piece of hardware required to do the job right the first time. This includes a high-quality alternator stand, a heavy-duty strap, and a three-piece black backing plate kit that ensures proper cooling airflow to your cylinders. The inclusion of the angled oil fill breather is a game-changer for maintenance, as it moves the fill point to a much more accessible position, preventing the messy spills common with standard upright stands. Topped off with a sleek black pulley and a chrome pulley nut, this kit doesn''t just perform betterit makes your engine bay look professional and clean. It is the definitive upgrade for any Type 1 engine owner looking to modernize their classic without sacrificing the iconic VW aesthetic.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
Pro Tip 1: The Critical Charging Indicator Bulb
One of the most common tech calls we receive involves the alternator failing to charge immediately after installation. It is vital to remember that an air-cooled VW alternator requires the dashboard charging indicator light (the "Gen" or "Alt" bulb) to be fully functional. This bulb completes the excitation circuit that tells the alternator to start charging. if this bulb is burnt out, or if you have replaced your dash with LED lights without adding a resistor, the alternator will not "wake up." Always verify your dash bulb is working before diagnosing a charging issue!
Pro Tip 2: Mastering Fan Belt Tension
Proper belt tension is the key to longevity for both your belt and your alternator bearings. Unlike modern cars with automatic tensioners, the VW system uses shims between the two halves of the alternator pulley to set the tension. If the belt is too loose, it will slip and squeal; if it is too tight, it will put excessive side-load on the alternator shaft, leading to premature bearing failure. You should aim for about 1/2 inch of deflection when pressing firmly on the belt midway between the pulleys. Always keep your extra shims on the outside of the pulley under the nut so you don''t lose them!
Pro Tip 3: Wiring Clean-Up and Bypass
When switching from an external regulator (usually found under the rear seat or on the firewall) to this internally regulated alternator, you will need to bypass the old regulator wiring. You must connect the large B+ wire coming from the starter/battery directly to the large post on the alternator, and the small wire from your dash light to the small spade terminal on the alternator. We highly recommend using a fresh 10-gauge wire for the main power feed to ensure you can actually utilize the full 60 amps without overheating your vintage wiring harness. Double-check all grounds to the engine block to ensure a perfect circuit.
