1. Master the Shim Method for Tension

Unlike modern cars with automatic tensioners, the VW air-cooled engine relies on shims located between the two halves of the top pulley to set belt tension. To tighten the belt, you must remove shims from the center and place them on the outside of the pulley half. To loosen it, move shims from the outside to the center. A properly tensioned belt should have about 1/2 inch (12mm) of deflection when pressed firmly with your thumb at the midpoint between the upper and lower pulleys. Never over-tighten the belt, as this will cause premature failure of your generator or alternator bearings.

2. Always Carry a Roadside Spare

The "V-belt" is the single most common failure point that can leave an air-cooled VW stranded. Use a straight edge to ensure the top and bottom pulleys are perfectly in line. Even a 1/8-inch offset can significantly reduce the lifespan of your belt and cause unwanted vibration and power loss.
