OVERVIEW
When it comes to unlocking the raw potential of your air-cooled Volkswagen, nothing carries the prestige or the performance pedigree of a genuine Weber Dual 44 IDF Carburetor Kit. This kit is specifically engineered for the enthusiast who demands more than just a slight increase in horsepower; it is designed for those building high-displacement street engines or rugged off-road powerhouses that require precise fuel atomization and immediate throttle response. By utilizing authentic Weber 44 IDF carburetors paired with EMPI''s industry-standard installation hardware, this package provides the perfect marriage of Italian engineering and American air-cooled expertise. Whether you are screaming across the dunes in a sand rail or cruising the coastal highways in a restored Cal-Look Beetle, the 44 IDF setup provides the massive airflow capacity needed to feed 1776cc to 2110cc+ engines without breaking a sweat.
This comprehensive kit, part number K1319, is a complete bolt-on solution that removes the guesswork from your performance upgrade. It includes a pair of factory-calibrated Weber carburetors, high-flow aluminum offset intake manifolds, and a heavy-duty hex bar linkage system that ensures both carburetors open in perfect synchronization. The inclusion of chrome air cleaner assemblies with high-flow gauze elements not only protects your investment from dust and debris but also adds a show-quality finish to your engine bay. While these carburetors come with a "baseline" factory calibration, they are highly tunable, allowing you to swap jets and venturis to perfectly match your specific cam profile, cylinder head porting, and exhaust setup. Please note that due to the increased width of the 44mm bodies and the offset manifolds, some modification to a stock fan shroud may be required to ensure proper clearance and fitment.

PRO TIPS
1. Use a Quality Fuel Pressure Regulator
One of the most common mistakes builders make when installing Weber IDF carburetors is running too much fuel pressure. Genuine Weber needles and seats are precision-engineered and are highly sensitive to pressure spikes. Most stock or high-performance mechanical pumps can put out 5 PSI or more, which will often overwhelm the float bowls and cause flooding or "dripping" at idle. We strongly recommend installing a high-quality fuel pressure regulator, such as a Holley or Malpassi unit, and setting it strictly between 3.0 and 3.5 PSI. This ensures a consistent fuel level in the bowls and prevents the rich-running issues that plague many dual-carb setups.
2. Master the Art of Synchronization
To get that smooth, "sewing machine" idle and crisp off-idle transition, you must synchronize your carburetors. Don''t rely on just your ears or visual inspections of the linkage. Invest in a high-quality airflow meter, like a Uni-Syn or an STE SK Flowmeter. You want to measure the draw of each individual barrel at idle to ensure they are pulling the exact same volume of air. If one carb is "leading" the other, your engine will fight itself, leading to increased vibration and heat. Once the carburetors are balanced at idle, verify the synchronization at 2,500 RPM to ensure your hex bar linkage is adjusted correctly and pulling both sides evenly throughout the rev range.
3. Account for Fan Shroud Clearance
Because the 44 IDF is a larger carburetor body compared to the 40 IDF or stock 34-PICT, space inside the engine bay becomes a premium. If you are using a stock-style 36HP or late-model "doghouse" fan shroud, you will likely find that the carburetor bodies or the linkage arms will make contact with the edges of the shroud. Before final installation, test-fit the manifolds and carbs. It is very common to need to "clearance" the shroud by slightly denting it or trimming the tinware. For a cleaner look and easier installation, many builders opt for an aftermarket "Aftermarket Performance" shroud which is narrower at the top specifically to accommodate dual Weber IDF or Dellorto DRLA carburetors.
