OVERVIEW
Transform the stance and stopping power of your classic Volkswagen with the EMPI Drop Spindle Disc Brake Kit. This all-in-one conversion is the ultimate solution for VW enthusiasts who demand a "low and slow" aesthetic without compromising the structural integrity of their suspension or the comfort of their ride. Unlike traditional lowering methods such as welding in adjusters or cutting and turning the torsion leaves, these 2.5-inch dropped spindles lower your vehicle by repositioning the axle stub higher on the spindle casting. This ingenious design allows you to achieve that coveted aggressive rake while maintaining full suspension travel and original steering geometry, ensuring your Beetle or Ghia remains a pleasure to drive on both city streets and winding backroads. By keeping the shocks in their intended operating range, you avoid the "pogo-stick" bouncy ride often associated with poorly lowered air-cooled cars.
Beyond the dramatic visual improvement, this kit provides a massive leap forward in safety and performance by replacing outdated front drum brakes with modern, reliable disc brakes. Drum brakes are notorious for fading under heat and requiring constant adjustment to pull straight; this EMPI kit eliminates those headaches with high-quality rotors and calipers designed for consistent, linear stopping power. This specific kit features the classic 4 on 130mm lug pattern, making it a direct fit for those who want to retain their factory-style 4-lug wheels or popular aftermarket options like EMPI 8-spokes or Rivieras. Every component in this kitfrom the precision-machined spindles to the premium wheel bearings and sealshas been engineered to withstand the rigors of daily driving. Whether you are navigating modern traffic or showing off at a local meetup, this kit ensures your Volkswagen stops as well as it looks, providing the peace of mind that only modern braking technology can offer.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Ensure Tie Rod Compatibility. When installing this drop spindle kit on 1966 through 1968 models, you must upgrade to 1969-and-later style tie rod ends. The eyelets on the dropped spindles are machined to accept the larger taper of the late-model tie rod ends. Attempting to use the early, smaller tie rod ends will result in a loose fit that is extremely dangerous and will cause immediate steering failure. Always double-check your tie rod fitment before completing the alignment process.
Tip 2: Mind Your Fender Clearance. Because these spindles move the wheels outward by approximately 1/4 inch per side, you must be mindful of tire-to-fender clearance, especially if you are running wider-than-stock tires or wheels with a deep dish offset. If you experience rubbing during tight turns or over bumps, consider moving to a narrower tire profile (such as a 145R15 or 135R15 "Smart Car" tire) or using a narrowed front beam to tuck the wheels back under the fenders for that perfect "cal-look" tuck.
Tip 3: Master Cylinder Upgrades and Bearing Prep. To get the most out of your new disc brakes, we highly recommend inspecting your master cylinder. While a stock drum/drum master cylinder can sometimes work, a dedicated disc/drum or disc/disc master cylinder provides the correct fluid volume and pressure for optimal caliper engagement. Additionally, never skimp on the bearing prep; use a high-quality High-Temp Disc Brake Grease to pack the inner and outer bearings thoroughly. Properly packed bearings are the difference between a smooth-rolling VW and a roadside breakdown due to a seized spindle.
