OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the longevity and performance of your air-cooled Volkswagen engine, thermal management is the single most important factor. This EMPI Doghouse Style Fan Shroud in a brilliant chrome finish is engineered to provide the superior cooling capacity required by modern 1600cc and larger high-performance engines. Unlike the early "non-doghouse" shrouds that exhausted hot oil cooler air directly onto the number three cylinder, this late-style doghouse design features a dedicated internal air passage. This passage redirects the air used to cool the oil cooler out the back of the engine through a separate tinware piece, ensuring that your cylinders and heads receive the maximum volume of ambient-temperature air. Whether you are cruising the boulevard or pushing through a long desert haul, this shroud is the backbone of a reliable cooling system that prevents the dreaded "dropped valve" syndrome associated with overheating.
Beyond its functional cooling advantages, this fan shroud is a centerpiece for any show-quality engine bay. The heavy-duty steel construction ensures structural integrity, preventing the vibration-induced cracking often seen in thinner, inferior replicas. The high-luster chrome plating provides a deep, mirror-like finish that resists discoloration when properly maintained, giving your Beetle, Karmann Ghia, or Dune Buggy a professional, custom look. This specific model includes the integrated heater ducts, making it the perfect choice for enthusiasts who want to maintain their factory heating system without sacrificing the aesthetic of a chrome-out engine. At Appletree Auto, we know that fitment and airflow are everything, and this shroud is designed with internal vanes to properly distribute air across the cooling fins of your jugs and heads, ensuring no hot spots are left behind.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Your Fan Width and Clearance
Before installing this shroud, it is critical to ensure you are using the correct 36mm wide cooling fan. The older, non-doghouse fans are significantly narrower and will not move enough air to satisfy the volume requirements of this shroud, leading to potential overheating. Additionally, always check the clearance between the fan and the shroud housing by spinning the fan by hand before you fully torque the generator or alternator stand. If you hear a "scuffing" sound, you may need to use a shroud spacer kit (Part # 4552-51) or adjust the shims behind the fan to ensure the fan is perfectly centered. A rubbing fan creates friction heat and can eventually lead to catastrophic failure of the fan hub or the shroud itself.
2. Don''t Neglect the Internal Vanes
One of the biggest mistakes builders make with aftermarket chrome shrouds is assuming all shrouds are created equal. This EMPI shroud includes internal air-directing vanes, which are essential for forcing air down into the cylinder tins rather than just letting it swirl around the top of the shroud. When you receive your shroud, do a quick visual inspection to ensure the vanes are secure. If you are building a high-revving race engine, some builders choose to add a small tack weld to the vanes for extra security. Remember, without these vanes, the number three and number four cylinders will run significantly hotter than one and two, which is the leading cause of premature engine wear in air-cooled Volkswagens.
3. Perfect the Seal for Maximum Cooling
The chrome finish looks amazing, but it won''t keep your engine cool if your air seals are leaking. To get the most out of your new doghouse shroud, you must ensure that the "hoop" seal around the doghouse exit and the engine compartment seal are in perfect condition. Air-cooled engines rely on a pressure differential; you want the top of the engine to be a high-pressure cool air zone and the bottom to be a low-pressure hot air zone. If you leave gaps around the heater ducts or the oil cooler exit, the fan will suck hot air from the exhaust area back into the shroud. Use high-quality rubber seals and make sure your tinware is straight. If you aren''t using the heater ducts, be sure to plug them with block-off caps to prevent losing valuable cooling air pressure.
