OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled Volkswagen''s stopping power with the EMPI Rear Disc Brake Kit, specifically engineered for short-spline swing axle applications. If you are still relying on decades-old drum brake technology, you are leaving safety and performance on the table. This kit transforms your rear end by replacing heavy, fade-prone drums with high-performance rotors and calipers designed to dissipate heat rapidly and provide consistent, linear braking force. Whether you are building a dedicated sand rail, a lightweight buggy, or a weekend play car, the 4 on 130mm bolt pattern ensures you maintain that classic late-model VW wheel fitment while gaining the modern reliability of a disc system. By eliminating the mechanical complexity of the old drum setup, you gain a system that is easier to service and far more capable of handling the demands of spirited driving.
This EMPI 22-2862-0 kit is a specialized solution for off-road and recreational vehicles where an emergency brake is not required. By stripping away the parking brake mechanism, EMPI has created a streamlined, lightweight, and robust braking package that focuses entirely on stopping performance. The kit includes everything you need to make the switch: precision-machined 4x130mm rotors, high-quality calipers with pads, heavy-duty mounting brackets, and all the necessary installation hardware. Designed for the 1958 through 1967 "short spline" swing axle, this kit solves the common fitment issues associated with mixing and matching drivetrain components. When you install an EMPI kit from Appletree Auto, you are investing in a legacy of Volkswagen performance that ensures your Beetle or buggy stops as fast as it goes.
FITMENT
This rear disc brake kit is designed for the following Volkswagen models and custom applications utilizing short-spline swing axles:
- VW Beetle (Type 1): 1958-1967 (Swing Axle Models)
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1958-1967 (Swing Axle Models)
- Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: Any custom chassis utilizing a 1958-1967 short-spline swing axle transmission.
- Note: This kit is specifically for "Short Spline" axles. It will NOT fit long-spline axles found on 1968-later swing axle models or IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) vehicles.
- Note: This is a non-emergency brake kit. It does not include provisions for a handbrake cable.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Your Axle Length Before Installation
One of the most common mistakes in VW brake upgrades is misidentifying the axle spline length. The "Short Spline" axle used in this kit was standard on Beetles from 1958 through 1967. If you attempt to install this on a 1968-only "Long Spline" swing axle, the rotor will not seat deeply enough on the splines, leading to catastrophic failure of the axle nut and hub. Always measure your axle projection or check your year-model before ordering. If your axle sticks out significantly past the seal housing, you likely have a long-spline setup and will need a different kit. Don''t forget to use a heavy-duty 36mm socket and a long breaker bar to reach the required 250+ ft-lbs of torque on the rear axle nut.
2. Optimize Your Master Cylinder for Disc Brakes
When transitioning from rear drums to rear discs, you are changing the fluid volume requirements of your braking system. Disc brake calipers require more fluid movement than wheel cylinders to achieve full clamping force. We highly recommend upgrading to a dual-circuit master cylinder if you haven''t already, and specifically one with a larger bore (such as a 20.6mm or 22mm unit). Additionally, since this kit does not use residual pressure valves (which are often built into drum-brake master cylinders), ensure your system is properly bled and that you aren''t "dragging" the brakes. If you feel a "spongy" pedal, it is often due to the master cylinder being undersized for the new volume requirements of the rear calipers.
3. Proper Rotor Preparation and Bedding
To get the longest life and best performance out of your EMPI disc brake kit, you must properly prep the rotors. Before installation, use a high-quality brake cleaner to remove the protective shipping oil from the rotor surfaces; failure to do so will contaminate your new brake pads instantly. Once installed, follow a proper bedding procedure: perform several gradual stops from 30 mph to 5 mph, followed by a few firmer stops from 45 mph to 10 mph. This allows the pad material to transfer evenly onto the rotor surface (creating a "transfer layer"), which prevents brake judder and ensures maximum friction. Never come to a complete stop and hold the brake pedal down firmly during the initial bedding process, as this can create "hot spots" on the rotor.
