1. Verify Top Dead Center (TDC) Accuracy
While EMPI degree pulleys are manufactured to high standards, you should never assume the "0" mark perfectly aligns with your specific crankshaft''s TDC without verification. During engine assembly or before final installation, use a piston stop tool to find the exact Top Dead Center of the number one cylinder. If the mark is slightly off due to crankshaft keyway variances or case machining, use a small file or paint pen to create a corrected reference point. Accurate timing is the difference between a crisp-running engine and one that suffers from pre-detonation or sluggish performance.
2. Proper Seal Lubrication and Installation
The sand seal system relies on a tight tolerance between the collar and the rubber seal. Before sliding the pulley onto the crankshaft, apply a generous amount of high-quality engine assembly lube or clean engine oil to the inner lip of the seal and the outer surface of the collar. This prevents "dry start" friction which can burn the seal lip and cause an oil leak immediately upon startup. Ensure the seal is seated perfectly square in the adapter to prevent uneven wear and ensure a vacuum-tight environment for your crankcase.
3. Don''t Forget the Extra-Long Bolt
One of the most common mistakes builders make when upgrading to a sand-sealed pulley is attempting to reuse the stock crankshaft pulley bolt. The sand-seal collar adds roughly 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch of thickness to the pulley hub. A stock bolt will not have enough thread engagement to safely hold the pulley at high RPMs, which can lead to the pulley backing off and destroying your crankshaft snout. Always pair this pulley with the EMPI 00-9118-0 Extra Long Bolt and torque it to the factory specification of 33-43 ft-lbs to ensure a secure, fail-safe fitment.
