OVERVIEW
Precision belt alignment is the unsung hero of a reliable air-cooled Volkswagen engine, and these Latest Rage Alternator and Generator Pulley Spacers are the professional solution to a common frustration. When you are building a high-performance Type 1 engine or simply refreshing a classic Beetle, even a slight misalignment between your crankshaft pulley and your charging system pulley can lead to disastrous results. A belt that is not perfectly centered will track poorly, leading to excessive heat, premature belt fraying, and the dreaded "thrown belt" that can leave you stranded on the side of the road or, worse, overheating your engine in seconds. These spacers provide the necessary offset to bring your pulleys into a perfect 180-degree plane, ensuring that your V-belt runs true and quiet under all RPM ranges. At Appletree Automotive, we know that aftermarket chrome pulleys or modern high-output alternators often have different mounting depths than original German equipment; these spacers bridge that gap with surgical precision.
Constructed from high-grade steel for maximum durability, this two-piece spacer set is designed to withstand the high-revving vibrations and thermal cycles inherent in the VW engine bay. Unlike flimsy makeshift washers that can compress or cause the pulley to wobble, these Latest Rage spacers offer a flat, stable mating surface that maintains the integrity of your pulley assembly. Whether you are running a standard generator on a vintage 1960s Bus or a conversion alternator on a custom off-road sand rail, having these spacers in your toolbox is a necessity. They allow for fine-tuning the stack height of your pulley system, which is especially critical when using sand seal pulleys or custom engine cases where factory tolerances may have shifted. Don''t let a five-dollar problem turn into a five-hundred-dollar repair; ensure your cooling fan and charging system are spinning in perfect harmony with a component engineered specifically for the air-cooled enthusiast.

PRO TIPS
1. The Straight-Edge Alignment Test
Never eyeball your pulley alignment. After installing your crankshaft pulley and your alternator/generator pulley, place a high-quality metal straight-edge or a long level across the face of both pulleys. The straight-edge should touch four points: the top and bottom edges of the crank pulley and the top and bottom edges of the upper pulley. If there is a gap at any of these points, your belt is tracking at an angle. Use these spacers behind the upper pulley to move it outward until the straight-edge sits perfectly flush. This simple check prevents the belt from "climbing" the side of the pulley groove, which is the primary cause of belt snap on the highway.
2. Distinguish Between Spacers and Shims
It is vital for air-cooled owners to understand the difference between these spacers and the thin adjustment shims. The thin shims are placed *between* the two halves of the pulley to adjust the belt tension (widening or narrowing the V-groove). These Latest Rage spacers are thicker and are designed to be placed *behind* the entire pulley assembly, between the pulley and the face of the alternator or generator. If your belt is too far inward toward the fan shroud, you need these spacers. If your belt is just loose or tight, you need to adjust your shims. Using the wrong component for the wrong job can lead to the pulley rubbing against the charging system housing.
3. Check for Fan Shroud Clearance
Whenever you add spacers to move a pulley outward, always rotate the engine by hand (with the ignition off) to ensure the back of the pulley or the cooling fan inside the shroud is not making contact with any metal. Sometimes moving the pulley outward can pull the internal fan closer to the shroud backing plate. If you hear a "tink-tink" sound while rotating the engine, you may have spaced it too far or your fan shroud may be slightly bent. Always ensure you have at least a few millimeters of clearance to account for engine vibration and heat expansion during operation. Correct spacing ensures a quiet, long-lasting engine build.
