Alternator & Generator Pulley, HD Black for Type 1
* Designed for Type 1 applications.
* CNC machined center for increased strength.
* Ideal for high-performance setups.
* Ensures protection for your investment.
OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your air-cooled Volkswagen, cooling is everything. The alternator or generator pulley is far more than just a simple guide for your fan belt; it is the critical link that drives your internal cooling fan, keeping cylinder head temperatures in check and ensuring your electrical system stays charged. This Heavy Duty (HD) Black Pulley from Latest Rage is engineered to surpass the limitations of standard, thin-stamped steel pulleys that are prone to warping or stripping under high-performance conditions. Featuring a precision CNC-machined center hub, this pulley provides a rock-solid interface with the woodruff key on your alternator or generator shaft. This eliminates the common "spinning" failure that often destroys the shaft and leaves you stranded on the side of the road or the middle of the dunes. Whether you are building a high-revving 2275cc monster or simply want a more reliable daily driver, this HD pulley offers the structural integrity required for modern driving demands.
Aesthetics and durability go hand-in-hand with this premium component. Finished in a sleek, semi-gloss heavy-duty black coating, this pulley is the perfect choice for enthusiasts looking to achieve a "blackout" engine look or those who prefer a clean, understated engine bay over flashy chrome. The two-piece design allows for traditional shimming, giving you total control over belt tension and alignment to prevent premature belt wear or "flipping" at high RPMs. Don''t let a cheap, flimsy pulley be the weak link in your cooling system. By upgrading to this CNC-centered HD unit, you are investing in a component designed to handle the increased rotational stress of performance engines while maintaining the classic functionality of the original VW design. It''s an essential upgrade for any Type 1 engine owner who demands both style and mechanical peace of mind.
FITMENT
This pulley is designed for Volkswagen Type 1 based engines equipped with a 12-volt alternator or generator. It fits the following models and applications:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1967-1977 (Sedan & Convertible)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1967-1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Transporter: 1967-1971 (With Type 1 1600cc engine)
- Volkswagen Thing: 1973-1974
- Custom Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, Trikes, and Baja Bugs using Type 1 upright cooling.
- Note: Fits standard 12V Bosch-style alternators and generators with a 17mm shaft.

PRO TIPS
1. Mastering Belt Tension via Shimming
Proper belt tension is the most misunderstood aspect of VW engine maintenance. Unlike modern cars with spring-loaded tensioners, the VW Type 1 uses shims between the two pulley halves to adjust tension. If the belt is too loose, your fan won''t spin fast enough to cool the engine; if it is too tight, you will burn out the bearings in your alternator or generator. Always keep a total of 10 shims on the assembly. To tighten the belt, move shims from between the pulley halves to the outside (under the nut). To loosen the belt, move shims from the outside to the center between the halves. There should be about 1/2 inch of deflection in the belt when pressed firmly with your thumb.
2. Protect the Woodruff Key and Shaft
Before installing your new HD black pulley, inspect the woodruff key on the alternator or generator shaft. A worn or "sheared" key will cause the pulley to wobble, leading to catastrophic failure of the CNC center. Always ensure the key is seated flat in the shaft before sliding the back half of the pulley on. Since this is an HD pulley with a CNC center, it fits much tighter than cheap stamped versions. Never "hammer" the pulley onto the shaft. If it is tight, use a fine emery cloth to clean any burrs off the shaft or the pulley bore for a perfect, snug fit that won''t vibrate at high speeds.
3. The "Emergency Shim" Inspection
Every time you change your oil or check your valves, take ten seconds to look at the pulley nut and the shims. If you see "red dust" or fine metal shavings around the center of the pulley, it is a sign that the pulley nut is loosening or the shims are vibrating. Because this is a heavy-duty steel pulley, it can handle more torque than a stock one, but it still requires the nut to be torqued to approximately 43 ft-lbs. A loose pulley will quickly wallow out the keyway, even on a CNC-centered unit. Keeping the nut tight ensures the two halves of the pulley act as a single, solid unit, protecting your engine''s cooling capacity.
