Overview
Precision tuning is the heartbeat of a high-performing air-cooled engine, and the EMPI 34 ICT, EPC 34, and 38E Idle Jet is a critical component in achieving that perfect stoichiometric balance. At Appletree Automotive, we know that the idle circuit is often misunderstood; it doesn''t just manage your engine while you''re sitting at a stoplight. In reality, the idle jet controls the fuel delivery for nearly the first third of your throttle opening, making it the most vital part of your drivability and "off-the-line" response. If your VW is experiencing a hesitation or a "flat spot" when you step on the gas, or if it pops and spits through the intake during light acceleration, your idle jetting is likely the culprit. This .50 size jet provides the exact fuel metering needed to bridge the gap between the idle circuit and the high-speed main circuit, ensuring a seamless transition that keeps your Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 running cooler and smoother.
Crafted from high-quality, corrosion-resistant brass, these jets are manufactured to exacting tolerances to ensure consistent flow rates across all cylinders. Whether you are running a dual 34 ICT setup on a 1600cc daily driver or a progressive 32/36 DGV on a weekend cruiser, having the correct jetting is the difference between a frustrating drive and a perfect one. These jets are designed to fit a wide array of popular carburetors, including the EMPI EPC series and the legendary Weber DGV and DGS series. By selecting the .50 jet, you are choosing a versatile middle-ground size that works exceptionally well for most mild-to-moderate street builds at sea level. Don''t settle for "good enough" tuning when you can dial in your air-cooled powerplant with the precision of genuine EMPI components from a source you trust.
Fitment
This idle jet is designed for a variety of air-cooled and water-cooled applications using the following carburetor models:
- EMPI EPC 34: Common on dual-carburetor kits for Type 1 and Type 3 engines.
- EMPI ICT 34: The go-to choice for reliable, low-maintenance dual carb setups.
- EMPI EPC 38E: High-performance synchronous carburetors.
- Weber 32/36 DGV / DGAV / DGEV: The standard progressive carburetor for VW and off-road applications.
- Weber 38 DGS / DGAS / DGES: High-flow synchronous carburetors for larger displacement engines.
- Vehicle Compatibility: Fits Volkswagen Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Bus (Type 2), Squareback, Fastback, and Thing (Type 181).
- Off-Road: Perfect for Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Baja Bugs utilizing these specific carburetor platforms.

Pro Tips from the Master Tech
Tip 1: Identifying the Lean Stumble
If you find that your engine stumbles or "bogs" immediately when you touch the accelerator, but clears up once you get into the higher RPMs, you are likely running too lean on your idle circuit. Before changing your main jets, try stepping up to this .50 idle jet. The idle jet handles the transition phase; if it''s too small, the engine starves for fuel before the main circuit can take over. A .50 jet is often the "sweet spot" for 1600cc to 1776cc engines running dual 34 ICTs, providing enough fuel to eliminate that annoying hesitation without fouling your spark plugs.
Tip 2: Never Use Wire to Clean Your Jets
It is incredibly tempting to use a small piece of copper wire or a welding tip cleaner to clear a clogged idle jet, but you must resist this urge! Brass is a soft metal, and using a hard tool will microscopicly enlarge the orifice or create burrs that disrupt the fuel atomization. This effectively changes a .50 jet into a .55 or worse, making your tuning impossible to stabilize. Always use high-pressure compressed air and a quality carburetor cleaning solvent to clear obstructions. If the clog is stubborn, it''s much cheaper and more accurate to simply replace the jet with a new one from Appletree Auto.
Tip 3: The Altitude Factor
Remember that as you increase in altitude, the air becomes less dense, which naturally makes your fuel mixture richer. If you are tuning your VW in a high-elevation environment (above 4,000 feet), you may find that a .50 jet is slightly too large, causing a heavy fuel smell or "chugging" at idle. However, for most enthusiasts living between sea level and 2,500 feet, the .50 is the ideal baseline. Always tune your idle mixture screw AFTER installing the new jet; if you have to turn the mixture screw out more than 2.5 turns to get a smooth idle, you need to go up to a larger idle jet. If you are less than 0.5 turns out, you need to go smaller.
