High-Performance Suspension Protection with EMPI Double-Woven Limit Straps
When you''re pushing your air-cooled beast to the limit in the dunes or on a rocky trail, your suspension components are under immense stress. These EMPI 24-inch double-woven limiting straps are designed to be the ultimate fail-safe for your off-road VW, whether you''re piloting a high-travel Baja Bug or a lightweight sand rail. Without proper limit straps, your shock absorbers act as the mechanical stop for your suspension travel, which inevitably leads to internal piston damage, broken shock mounts, and blown seals. Even worse, over-extending your trailing arms can put your CV joints at extreme angles, causing them to bind or snap under load. By installing these heavy-duty straps, you are effectively creating a mechanical stop that saves your expensive drivetrain and suspension parts from the violent forces of full extension during jumps or high-speed whoops.
At Appletree Auto, we know that standard equipment isn''t always enough for extreme builds, which is why we carry these double-woven versions. Unlike single-ply straps that can stretch significantly over time, these double-thickness straps offer superior tensile strength and a much lower stretch rate, ensuring your suspension travel remains consistent season after season. The heavy-duty heat-treated steel ends are built to withstand the shearing forces of high-speed landings, while the high-quality nylon webbing is resistant to moisture, UV damage, and abrasive sand. This pair of 24-inch straps is specifically engineered for long-travel rear ends and custom front beam setups where maximum durability is the only option. Don''t let a broken shock end your weekend early; invest in the hardware used by the pros.
Universal Fitment for Air-Cooled VW and Off-Road Applications
While these are a universal high-performance part, they are most commonly utilized on the following air-cooled and custom off-road applications:
- Volkswagen Beetle: Ideal for Baja conversions and long-travel rear suspension setups.
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: Perfect for ruggedized off-road builds and rally styles.
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus: Used in heavy-duty Transporter and Kombi off-road configurations.
- Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: Essential for Meyers Manx, Berrien, and custom tube chassis rails.
- Custom Trailing Arms: A must-have for 2x3, 3x3, and 5x5 long-travel rear arm setups.
- Woods Buggies: Provides critical protection against suspension over-extension in technical terrain.

Professional Installation Tips from the Appletree Shop
1. Calculate the Safety Buffer
Always mount your limiting straps so that they reach full tension at least 1 inch before your shock absorber reaches its maximum extension. This "safety buffer" is critical because even double-woven straps will experience a small amount of "settling" or momentary stretch under the massive weight of a vehicle during a high-speed jump. If you set them to the exact length of the shock, the strap may stretch just enough to let the shock bottom out internally, defeating the purpose of the strap entirely and risking damage to your internal valving.
2. Optimize the Mounting Angle
When calculating your required length, remember that the mounting angle significantly impacts the strap
