OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the drivetrain of your classic Volkswagen, there is no component more critical yet more often overlooked than the CV boot. This EMPI IRS CV Boot Kit is specifically designed for the heavy-duty 002 and 091 transaxles found in the Type 2 Bus, which are the gold standard for both stock restorations and high-performance off-road applications. A torn boot is the leading cause of CV joint failure; once the protective rubber barrier is breached, the specialized molybdenum grease escapes while abrasive road grime, sand, and moisture enter the precision-machined races. This kit provides a robust, flexible shield that ensures your 100mm CV joints remain lubricated and protected against the elements, preventing the costly metal-on-metal wear that leads to "clicking" joints and eventual axle failure.
Engineered for durability and a precise fit, this kit is an essential item for any VW owner performing a seasonal inspection or a complete rear-end overhaul. Whether you are piloting a 1970s Westfalia through the mountain passes or pushing a long-travel sand rail to its limits in the dunes, these boots are built to handle the extreme angles and high rotational speeds inherent to the Type 2 IRS suspension system. Each kit is sold individually and includes a premium-grade rubber boot along with a high-temperature CV grease pack, ensuring you have the primary components needed to refresh a single joint. Don''t let a five-dollar crack in a piece of rubber leave you stranded on the side of the trail; upgrading to these high-quality EMPI boots is the best insurance policy you can buy for your air-cooled drivetrain.

PRO TIPS
1. The Secret to a Clean Install
Before installing your new boot, it is absolutely vital to clean the CV joint and the axle surface thoroughly. Use a high-quality parts cleaner or brake cleaner to remove every trace of old, gritty grease from the joint races and bearings. If you leave even a small amount of old grease contaminated with dirt, it will act like sandpaper on your new joint components. Once the joint is dry and clean, pack the new grease deeply into the cage and around the balls before sliding the boot into place. This ensures immediate lubrication the moment the wheels start turning.
2. Avoid the "Ballooning" Effect
A common mistake during installation is failing to "burp" the boot. When you tighten the clamps on a CV boot, air can become trapped inside. As the joint heats up during operation, that air expands, causing the boot to balloon outward. This makes the rubber more likely to rub against the chassis or become snagged by debris. After the boot is seated but before you tighten the final small clamp on the axle, gently insert a small, blunt screwdriver under the lip of the boot to allow the internal and external air pressure to equalize. This keeps the boot in its intended shape and extends its service life significantly.
3. Inspect Your Flanges
When you have the axles off to replace the boots, take an extra minute to inspect the metal drive flanges on the transaxle and the wheel hubs. Look for any burrs, nicks, or sharp edges on the mating surfaces. These can snag the rubber during installation or create a leak path for the grease. Also, always use high-quality CV bolts (Grade 12.9) and Schnorr lock washers. These 100mm joints handle a lot of torque, and the last thing you want is for a bolt to back out, which can tear your brand-new boot instantly and potentially cause catastrophic damage to your transaxle casing.
