OVERVIEW
When you are deep in the middle of a custom build, whether it is a rugged Baja Bug or a high-performance sand rail, the integrity of your chassis is only as good as the steel you use. This Allstar Performance 1.500-inch x .095-inch Round D.O.M. (Drawn Over Mandrel) tubing is the gold standard for air-cooled enthusiasts who demand maximum strength without unnecessary weight. Unlike standard electric-resistance welded (ERW) tubing, D.O.M. undergoes an additional cold-drawing process over a mandrel, which creates a seamless, more dimensionally accurate tube with a much higher yield and tensile strength. For the VW fabricator, this means smoother bends, tighter tolerances, and a finished product that can withstand the brutal vibrations and impacts synonymous with off-road desert racing and trail riding. Don''t settle for inferior materials when your safety and the structural longevity of your project are on the line.
At Appletree Automotive, we understand that fabrication is an art form, and this 48-inch section of premium steel is designed to be the backbone of your next masterpiece. The 1.500-inch outside diameter combined with a .095-inch wall thickness is the "sweet spot" for many sanctioning body requirements for roll cages in lighter vehicles, as well as for constructing high-clearance bumpers, nerf bars, and engine cages. Its excellent weldability and consistent wall thickness make it a dream to work with on the bench or under the car. Whether you are bracing a Type 1 chassis to handle a high-horsepower stroker motor or building a custom rack for your Type 2 Bus, this Allstar Performance tubing provides the professional-grade foundation you need to get the job done right the first time.
FITMENT
This is a universal fabrication component commonly used for structural and safety upgrades on the following air-cooled VW models and custom chassis:
- Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle: Ideal for Baja Bug roll cages, body mounts, and engine guards (All Years).
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus: Perfect for custom roof racks, internal bracing, and heavy-duty bumpers (1950-1979).
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback/Fastback/Notchback): Used for subframe reinforcement and custom suspension mounts.
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: Excellent for stiffening the pan and adding internal safety hoops.
- Volkswagen Type 181 Thing: Preferred for perimeter cages and brush guards.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: The primary choice for main hoops, spreaders, and shock towers on Manx-style and tube-frame rails.
- Custom Trikes: Used for frame extensions and seating supports.

PRO TIPS
1. Mastering the Bend with D.O.M.
When working with .095-wall D.O.M. tubing, always use a high-quality mandrel bender with the correct 1.500-inch die. Because D.O.M. is denser and more uniform than standard pipe or ERW tubing, it has less "spring-back," but it still requires precision. If you are using a manual bender, make sure your mounting is rock solid. Always account for your bend radius before cutting your tube to length. To prevent kinking, ensure the tube is fully seated in the die and that you are applying consistent pressure. If you are doing complex multi-plane bends for a VW roll cage, use a digital angle finder to ensure symmetry between the driver and passenger sides.
2. Surface Preparation for Superior Welds
D.O.M. tubing typically comes with a thin layer of mill oil or light surface oxidation to protect it during shipping. Before you even think about firing up your TIG or MIG welder, you must clean the weld zone thoroughly. Use a flap disc or a wire wheel to strip the steel down to a bright, shiny finish at least one inch back from the joint. Follow this up with a wipe-down using acetone or a high-quality degreaser. Proper cleaning ensures deep penetration and prevents porosity in your welds, which is critical for structural components like suspension mounts or roll bars where a failure is not an option.
3. Perfecting the Fishmouth Notch
For the strongest possible joint, especially on a VW chassis where space is tight, your notches must be precise. We recommend using a dedicated tubing notcher with a bi-metal hole saw. When fitting 1.500-inch tubing against another tube, a "tight" fit means there should be no visible daylight in the joint. If you can fit a penny in the gap, it is too wide. A tight fit-up allows for better heat control during welding and prevents the tube from pulling out of alignment as the weld cools. If you are hand-notching with a grinder, use a paper template to mark your cuts and take your timepatience on the bench saves hours of frustration during final assembly.
