* Fits Type 2 Bus, years 1968-1979.
* Works on both brake and clutch pedals.
* Sold individually.
OVERVIEW
When it comes to the safety and ergonomics of your late-model Bay Window Bus, the smallest details often make the biggest difference in your driving experience. These EMPI replacement pedal pads are designed to restore that factory-fresh grip and tactile response that has likely worn away over decades of constant use. Nothing is more unsettling than a foot slipping off the brake or clutch pedal during a critical gear change or a sudden stop, especially in a vintage Type 2 where pedal effort can be significantly higher than in modern vehicles. By swapping out your old, smoothed-over rubber for these high-quality, ribbed replacements, you are ensuring that your connection to the vehicle remains secure and predictable, whether you are navigating tight city streets or cruising the open highway.
Engineered to meet or exceed original equipment standards, these pads are crafted from a durable, high-density rubber compound specifically formulated to resist the oils, heat, and friction common in a VW cabin environment. The deep-ribbed tread pattern is specifically molded to provide maximum traction for various types of footwear, giving you the confidence to operate your Bus without hesitation. These are not just cosmetic upgrades; they are essential safety components for any serious restoration or maintenance routine. Sold individually, these pads allow you to refresh either the clutch or the brake pedal, though we always recommend replacing them in pairs to ensure a consistent feel and a uniform, professional look across your entire pedal assembly.

PRO TIPS
1. The Warm Water Trick for Easier Installation
Installing new rubber pedal pads can sometimes be a struggle, especially if the rubber is cold and stiff. To make the process much easier, soak the new pedal pads in a bowl of very hot (but not boiling) water for about 3 to 5 minutes before installation. This softens the rubber compound and makes it significantly more pliable, allowing you to stretch the lip of the pad over the metal pedal plate with much less effort. Once the rubber cools down, it will shrink slightly and "lock" onto the pedal for a tight, wiggle-free fit that won''t slide around while you are driving.
2. Inspect Your Pedal Assembly While the Pads Are Off
Since you are already down in the footwell, take a moment to inspect the underlying metal pedal plates and the pedal arm bushings. It is common for the metal plates to develop surface rust over time as moisture from your shoes gets trapped under the old rubber. Use a wire brush to clean off any oxidation and apply a thin coat of rust-preventative paint before installing the new pads. Additionally, check for side-to-side play in the pedals; if they feel loose or "sloppy," it might be time to replace the pedal shaft bushings or the return springs to ensure your Type 2 Bus handles as safely as possible.
3. Maintain Grip by Avoiding Silicone Protectants
While it might be tempting to spray your new pedal pads with a "shiny" interior protectant to make them look brand new during a detail, you should never use silicone-based or oil-based dressings on your foot controls. These products make the rubber extremely slippery, which creates a major safety hazard when your shoes are wet. To keep your pads looking great and performing safely, simply clean them with a mild soap and water solution and a stiff nylon brush. This removes dirt and oils from the grooves of the ribbing without compromising the high-traction surface that EMPI engineered into the rubber.
