Pro Tech Tips for CV Joint Maintenance

Clean the Bolt Recess Completely: CV joint bolts are notorious for being packed with old, hardened grease and road grime. Before inserting the tool, use a small pick or a shot of brake cleaner to clear the 12-point recess. If the socket cannot seat to its full depth because of debris, the tool will likely slip and strip the bolt splines.

Avoid the Hex Head Trap: Never attempt to use a standard 6mm Allen (hex) head wrench on these 12-point bolts. While a hex tool may feel like it fits initially, it does not provide enough contact surface for the torque required to break these bolts loose. Using the wrong tool will almost certainly round out the bolt head, requiring drilling or extraction.
