This EMPI high-performance flywheel is engineered specifically for Type 1 Volkswagen air-cooled engines, commonly found in the VW Beetle, Karmann Ghia, VW Thing, and early Bus models. It features a 200mm diameter with 130 teeth, making it compatible with 12-volt electrical systems and starters. The 8-dowel offset hole pattern is designed for performance crankshafts, providing superior strength over the standard 4-dowel design. Weighing approximately 13 lbs, this lightened chromoly unit significantly improves throttle response and acceleration in performance applications.

Professional Technical Tips

Tip 1: Match Your Crankshaft Pattern. Before installation, ensure your crankshaft is machined for an 8-dowel pattern. While this flywheel offers maximum shear strength for high-horsepower engines, it will not fit a standard 4-dowel crankshaft without professional machining. Always check that the dowel pins are seated fully and evenly before torquing.

Tip 2: Mandatory End Play Adjustment. You must re-measure and set your crankshaft end play whenever a new flywheel is installed. Use a dial indicator to check the movement and adjust the three shims behind the flywheel to achieve the factory specification (typically .003" to .005"). Failing to set the end play correctly can lead to premature engine failure or thrust bearing damage.

Tip 3: Gland Nut Torque and Sealing. This is an O-ring style flywheel; always install a fresh O-ring (part number 311-105-295A) and a new main seal during installation. Use a heavy-duty chromoly gland nut and torque it to a minimum of 217 ft-lbs. We highly recommend using a flywheel locking tool and a high-quality torque wrench to ensure the flywheel is safely secured for high-RPM use.
