PRO TIPS

1. Account for the Radical Offset

The 2-inch backspacing on a 10-inch wide rim is an extreme configuration. This means the majority of the wheel width is extending outward from the hub. Before mounting, ensure you have the necessary clearance from your spring plates and shock towers, but more importantly, ensure your fenders are wide enough to cover the tire. On a standard Beetle, these wheels will stick out several inches past the stock bodywork. For the best results, use these in conjunction with 6-inch or wider fiberglass Baja fenders or on a dedicated tube-chassis sand rail where body interference isn''t an issue.

2. Use the Correct Lug Hardware

Steel wheels require specific lug seating to ensure they stay tight during vibration-heavy off-road sessions. Always use 60-degree taper (conical seat) lug nuts or bolts with these EMPI Series 21 rims. Never use the radius (ball seat) lugs found on stock VW aluminum wheels or some aftermarket alloys, as they will not seat correctly in the steel dimples. We also recommend re-torquing your lugs after the first hour of off-road use, as the steel can "set" slightly against the hub under extreme heat and pressure.

3. Optimize Tire Pressure for Traction

Because these are 10-inch wide steel rims, they are perfect for "airing down" to increase your contact patch in the soft stuff. If you are running a wide 31x10.50 or a set of sand paddles, you can safely drop your PSI to significantly lower levels than you would on a narrower street rim. This allows the tire to wrap around obstacles and float on top of the sand. However, because these are not beadlocks, avoid dropping below 8-10 PSI in high-speed cornering scenarios to prevent the tire from unseating from the rim under lateral load.
