Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Verify Point Gap Before Firing: Even though this unit comes ready to install, always double-check the point gap. For the 009 distributor, the factory recommended gap is between .016" and .020". An incorrect gap will alter your dwell and timing, leading to poor engine performance or difficulty starting.

Set Static Timing for Mechanical Advance: Unlike vacuum advance distributors, the 009 relies entirely on centrifugal weights. A common starting point for static timing is 7.5 to 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). Once the engine is running, use a timing light to ensure your total advance does not exceed 28 to 32 degrees at 3,000+ RPM to prevent engine pinging or overheating.

Lubricate the Distributor Cam: To extend the life of your points, apply a very small amount of high-temperature distributor cam grease to the lobes of the distributor shaft. Additionally, place one drop of light engine oil on the felt wick located under the rotor. This prevents the point rubbing block from wearing down prematurely and keeps the mechanical advance mechanism moving smoothly.
