Pro Tech Tips for Carburetor Synchronization

Tip 1: Operating Temperature is Key. Always perform your synchronization after the engine has reached full operating temperature. Ensure that the chokes are fully open and the fast-idle cams have disengaged. Attempting to sync a cold engine will result in an inconsistent idle once the vehicle warms up.

Tip 2: Balance at Idle and Off-Idle. Start by balancing the airflow at a steady idle. Once the idle is set, have an assistant hold the throttle at approximately 2,500 RPM. Check the synchronization again at this higher speed. If the readings differ at higher RPMs, it usually indicates that your throttle linkage rods need adjustment rather than the carburetor idle screws.

Tip 3: Check for Linkage Binding. Before you begin adjusting the carburetors, disconnect the throttle linkage from the carburetors. Use the Uni-Carb to set the base idle on each unit independently. Only after the carburetors are perfectly matched should you reconnect the linkage. This ensures that the linkage itself isn't "pulling" one carburetor open more than the other at rest.
