OVERVIEW
When it comes to the steering geometry of your custom off-road machine, there is zero room for compromise. This Latest Rage Heavy-Duty U-Joint is engineered to handle the rigorous demands of sand rails, dune buggies, and high-performance Baja Bugs that require a precision transition between different shaft sizes. Whether you are navigating technical rock sections or blasting through high-speed desert whoops, the connection between your steering wheel and the steering rack or box must be absolute. This U-joint provides a seamless, bind-free rotation that ensures every input you make at the wheel is translated directly to the tires, giving you the confidence needed to push your air-cooled VW to its absolute limits without worrying about steering failure or excessive play.
The 17-2627-0 model is specifically designed for builders who need to bridge the gap between a 7/8-inch smooth steering shaft and a 3/4-inch 36-spline component. The smooth bore side allows for a custom-fit weld-on application, which is a favorite among chassis fabricators building one-off steering columns or extending existing setups for long-travel front ends. On the opposing end, the 3/4-inch 36-spline side offers a secure, mechanical lock common in many high-quality steering racks and aftermarket steering columns. Crafted from high-strength forged steel and featuring precision needle bearings, this universal joint is built to resist the grit and grime of the trail while maintaining a tight, slop-free feel that inferior components simply cannot match. Don''t settle for less when your vehicle''s control is on the line; upgrade to the reliability of Latest Rage.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Protect the Bearings During Welding
Since one side of this U-joint features a 7/8-inch smooth bore intended for welding, it is critical to manage heat soak. Excessive heat can liquefy the internal grease or damage the needle bearing seals, leading to premature failure. We recommend wrapping the center "cross" section of the U-joint with a cold, soaking wet rag while welding the smooth end to your steering shaft. This acts as a heat sink, drawing thermal energy away from the sensitive internal components. Always use a high-quality TIG or MIG welder and ensure you have full penetration for a fail-safe steering connection.
Tip 2: Proper U-Joint Phasing
If your steering system utilizes two U-joints, you must ensure they are "in phase" with one another. This means the yokes at each end of the intermediate shaft must be aligned in the same plane. If the U-joints are out of phase, it can cause a "binding" sensation or a jerky steering feel as the shaft rotates, because the speed fluctuations inherent in universal joints won''t cancel each other out. Take the extra time to align your splines and weld your smooth ends so that the yokes are perfectly parallel to ensure the smoothest possible steering arc.
Tip 3: Set Screw Safety and Maintenance
On the 3/4-inch 36-spline side, always use a high-quality set screw or through-bolt as required by your specific shaft design. It is highly recommended to "dimple" the splined shaft where the set screw seats to prevent the shaft from sliding out of the joint under load. Additionally, use a drop of medium-strength thread locker (Blue Loctite) on the set screw to ensure vibration from the trail doesn''t back it out. Regularly inspect your steering linkages after every major off-road outing to check for any signs of play or looseness in the spline engagement.
