OVERVIEW
When you''re building a custom sand rail, a rugged woods buggy, or a ground-up dune buggy project, the steering system is the literal backbone of your driver interface. This Latest Rage Steering Shaft is engineered for the fabricator who needs a "blank canvas" to create a precise and reliable steering setup. At a massive five feet in length, this shaft provides more than enough material to accommodate even the longest chassis designs, allowing you to cut it down to the exact specification required for your specific seating position and steering box location. The raw steel finish is intentional, providing a perfect surface for welding custom u-joints, support bearings, or quick-release hubs without the need to grind off chrome or powder coating first.
The integrated 3-bolt flange is a standard in the off-road and air-cooled VW world, designed to bolt directly to a wide variety of aftermarket steering wheels from top brands like Grant, EMPI, and Latest Rage. By utilizing a 7/8-inch diameter, this shaft strikes the ideal balance between torsional rigidity and weight savings. Whether you are navigating tight technical trails in a Baja Bug or blasting across open dunes, this shaft ensures that every input at the wheel is translated directly to the tires with zero flex. It is the go-to choice for builders who demand a robust, professional-grade steering column that can be customized to fit any cockpit configuration imaginable.
FITMENT
While this is a universal fabrication component, it is most commonly used in the following applications:
- Dune Buggies: All years and models including Manx-style and fiberglass bodies.
- Sand Rails: Custom tube chassis designs (2-seat, 4-seat, and long-travel).
- Woods Buggies: Heavy-duty off-road builds requiring custom steering geometry.
- Baja Bugs: Custom steering column conversions for racing or extreme off-road use.
- Go-Karts and Quarter Midgets: High-end custom steering setups.
- Trikes: Custom VW-powered three-wheelers.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Support and Alignment
Because this shaft is 59 inches long, you must never run it unsupported. A steering shaft of this length can "whip" or flex under load if not properly stabilized. We highly recommend using at least two support pointstypically a bronze bushing or a high-quality heim jointmounted to your dash bar and your mid-chassis support. Ensure the shaft is perfectly aligned with your steering box or rack and pinion to prevent binding. If you are using u-joints to achieve an angle, make sure the joints are "in phase" to ensure smooth, linear steering rotation without the "notchy" feel common in poorly aligned systems.
2. Precision Cutting and Deburring
When customizing the length of your steering shaft, always measure three times before making your final cut. Use a chop saw or a high-quality hacksaw to ensure a perfectly square end. Once the cut is made, it is critical to deburr the inner and outer edges of the steel. If you are welding a u-joint or a splined adapter to the end of the shaft, a clean, chamfered edge will allow for better weld penetration and a much stronger bond. Remember, your steering is a safety-critical system; your welds must be 100% structural and performed by a competent welder.
3. Protecting the Raw Steel Finish
Since this shaft arrives in a raw steel state, it will begin to develop surface rust quickly if left unprotected in humid environments. Once you have finished all your welding, cutting, and mock-up phases, you must thoroughly clean the shaft with a degreaser or wax-and-grease remover. We recommend finishing the shaft with a high-quality chassis paint, powder coat, or even a clear coat if you prefer the industrial look. Don''t forget to grease the contact points where the shaft passes through your bushings or heim joints to ensure a lifetime of smooth, friction-free operation.
