OVERVIEW
When you are restoring a classic 1961 to 1967 Volkswagen Beetle, the details are what truly separate a hobbyist project from a professional-grade restoration. One of the most overlooked yet vital components of the front trunk area is the trunk liner. Over decades of use, original fiberboard liners often become warped, water-damaged, or completely missing, leaving your wiring harness, brake fluid reservoir, and fuel tank exposed to the elements and potential damage from shifting cargo. This EMPI Trunk Liner is precision-engineered to provide a clean, finished appearance while offering a protective barrier that keeps your trunk organized and looking exactly as it did when it rolled off the assembly line in Wolfsburg. It is more than just a cover; it is a structural piece of interior trim that defines the cleanliness and value of your vintage air-cooled VW.
This heavy-duty fiberboard liner is manufactured to exact factory specifications, ensuring a snug fit against the inner fenders and apron. Unlike flimsy modern alternatives that lose their shape after a few months, this heavy fiberboard material provides the necessary rigidity to support light items and resist sagging over time. Installing this liner not only improves the aesthetics of your vehicle for car shows and local meetups but also serves a functional purpose by insulating the cabin from a portion of road noise and preventing loose items in the trunk from snagging on sensitive electrical connections or the wiper motor assembly. If you are tired of looking at a rat''s nest of wires and bare metal every time you open your hood, this is the essential upgrade your 1960s Bug deserves to regain its original dignity and utility.

PRO TIPS
1. Organize Your Wiring Before Installation
Before you slide your new fiberboard liner into place, take the time to inspect the wiring harness behind the dashboard. Since this liner will be covering the backside of the speedometer, wiper motor, and fuse box, it is the perfect opportunity to use zip ties or cloth harness tape to secure any loose wires. Ensuring your electrical system is tidy and tucked away will prevent the liner from bulging and protect your connections from being stressed or disconnected during the installation process. Don''t forget to check your brake fluid level and the condition of your reservoir hoses now, as access will be more limited once the liner is installed.
2. Use a Heat Gun or Steam for Stubborn Contours
While this liner is die-cut to the correct shape, fiberboard can sometimes be stiff depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. If you find the liner is a bit resistant to conforming to the curves of the inner wheel wells, you can lightly mist the back of the board with water or use a heat gun on a low setting to make the material more pliable. Gently work the board into the corners, being careful not to over-saturate or crease the material. Once it dries in place, it will "set" to the specific shape of your Beetle''s trunk, providing a custom-looking fit that won''t rattle while you are driving.
3. Protect Against Moisture and Humidity
Fiberboard is sensitive to moisture, which is why so many original liners ended up rotting away. To ensure your new EMPI liner lasts for another fifty years, make sure your trunk seal (the rubber weatherstripping around the hood) is in excellent condition and not leaking. If you live in a particularly damp climate, some restorers choose to apply a very light coat of clear satin sealer to the back side of the board before installation to provide an extra moisture barrier. Always ensure the drain holes in the bottom of your spare tire well are clear so that any accidental water entry can escape rather than evaporating and soaking into your new liner.
