OVERVIEW
When the temperature drops and you reach for that heater lever in your classic Volkswagen, the last thing you want is a limp handle and a freezing cabin. The heater cable connector, often referred to by seasoned builders as the heater cable barrel nut, is the critical mechanical link between your cockpit controls and the heater box flaps located deep underneath the engine. Over decades of exposure to road salt, moisture, and heat cycles, the original factory hardware often becomes a corroded, seized mess that makes adjustment impossible or leads to a snapped cable at the most inconvenient time. This EMPI replacement connector is engineered to restore that factory-fresh tactile response, ensuring that when you pull the lever, your heater boxes actually snap shut to deliver that glorious air-cooled warmth to your toes. Don''t let a tiny piece of hardware stand between you and a comfortable driving experience during the winter months.
Constructed from high-strength steel with a protective zinc plating, this late-style heater cable clamp kit is designed to withstand the harsh environment of the VW undercarriage. It features a precision-drilled channel for the heater wire to pass through and a robust set screw that bites down securely without fraying the cable. Whether you are performing a full body-off restoration or just trying to get your daily driver ready for the commute, replacing these connectors is a cheap insurance policy against future failures. These are sold individually, but we always recommend replacing them in pairs since if one has succumbed to the elements, the other side isn''t far behind. It is the small details like this high-quality connector that separate a reliable vintage Volkswagen from one that leaves you shivering on the side of the road. Trust Appletree Auto to provide the hardware that keeps your classic Bug, Bus, or Ghia functioning exactly as the engineers in Wolfsburg intended.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: The Anti-Seize Advantage
Because these connectors live in one of the most vulnerable areas of your Volkswagenexposed to road spray, heat from the exhaust, and mudthey are notorious for seizing up over time. Before you install your new connector, apply a small dab of nickel or copper-based anti-seize to the threads of the set screw. This simple step ensures that if you ever need to adjust your heater cables in the future, the screw will back out easily instead of snapping off or stripping the head. This is especially important for those living in the "Rust Belt" where salt is used on the roads.
Tip 2: Perfecting the Tension Loop
When installing the cable through the connector, make sure your heater lever inside the car is in the fully "OFF" position. Go underneath the car and pull the heater box lever to its fully closed position. Slide the connector onto the cable and tighten it down while holding the lever closed. This ensures that when the heat is off, no hot air leaks into the cabin during the summer. Leave about half an inch of extra cable sticking out past the connector; don''t cut it flush. This extra "tail" allows you to grab the cable with pliers if you ever need to re-tension the system later.
Tip 3: Avoid the Over-Tighten Snap
It is tempting to crank down on the set screw to make sure the cable never slips, but these heater cables are made of single-strand spring wire. If you over-tighten the screw, you can create a "crush point" that weakens the wire, causing it to snap right at the connector the first time you pull the heater lever hard. Tighten the screw until it is firm and the cable cannot be pulled through by hand, then give it just a tiny fraction of a turn more. If you find the cable slipping, check to see if your heater box levers are binding or rusted; the connector shouldn''t have to fight a seized lever.
