OVERVIEW
When you are pushing your air-cooled Volkswagen to the limit, whether it is on the drag strip, the canyon roads, or the deep sand dunes, heat is the ultimate enemy of your braking system. This EMPI Scalloped Brake Rotor is engineered to provide the aggressive stopping power and superior thermal management required for high-performance applications. The unique scalloped edge design isn''t just for show; it significantly reduces rotating unsprung weight, allowing your suspension to react faster and your engine to spin up more freely. Combined with precision cross-drilling and strategic slotting, this rotor effectively vents out-gassing and sweeps away brake dust, ensuring that your brake pads maintain a consistent, firm bite even under heavy, repeated braking cycles that would cause standard rotors to fade.
Versatility and durability are at the core of this rear rotor design, making it an essential upgrade for builders who demand premium wheel options and long-term reliability. It features a double-drilled hub configuration, supporting both the classic Chevy 5x4.75-inch bolt pattern and the iconic Porsche 5x130mm pattern. This specific model is designed for "Long Spline" applications, fitting perfectly on 1968 and later IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) transaxles as well as late-model Swing Axle setups found in many custom buggies. To ensure a professional finish that lasts, each rotor is treated with a high-quality zinc plating. This protective layer is vital for resisting the corrosive effects of moisture and road grime, preventing the unsightly "rust ring" look and keeping your braking assembly looking as sharp as it performs.
FITMENT
This rotor is designed for rear applications with Long Spline axles. It is the "Right" (Passenger Side) configuration due to the directional nature of the drilling and slotting. Fits the following models and custom configurations:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1968-1977 (Standard IRS models)
- Volkswagen Super Beetle: 1971-1979 (IRS models)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1968-1974 (IRS models)
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1968-1973
- Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: Any custom chassis utilizing 1968-later "Long Spline" IRS or Swing Axle assemblies.
- Note: Not for use with early "Short Spline" axles unless spacers or axle swaps are performed.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
1. The Importance of Rotor Cleaning Before Installation
Even though these rotors feature a high-quality zinc plating, they often arrive with a thin film of shipping oil or "cosmoline" intended to prevent oxidation during transit and storage. Before you slide these onto your axles, you MUST thoroughly clean the friction surfaces with a high-quality brake cleaner. If you don''t, this oil will immediately contaminate your new brake pads, leading to glazed friction material, squealing, and significantly reduced stopping power. Spray the rotor down and wipe it with a clean, lint-free rag until no residue remains on the cloth.
2. Mastering the Axle Nut Torque
Installing rear rotors on a VW requires dealing with the massive 36mm rear axle nut. This nut requires an immense amount of torquetypically around 250 to 300 foot-pounds depending on your specific year and axle type. We strongly recommend using a "Cheater Bar" or a dedicated torque multiplier tool (often called a "Buddy Bar") to achieve this. Never rely on a standard 1/2-inch drive ratchet. Furthermore, always use a new cotter pin and ensure it is properly bent; if that axle nut backs off even slightly, it will destroy the splines on your brand-new rotor and your axle in seconds.
3. Proper Pad Bedding for Scalloped Rotors
To get the most out of the cross-drilled and slotted features, you must "bed-in" your brake pads correctly. This process deposits a thin, even layer of pad material onto the rotor surface. Find a safe, open road and perform a series of 5 to 10 decelerations from 45 mph down to 10 mph using moderate pressure. Do NOT come to a complete stop during this cycle, as it can cause "pad transfer" spots that lead to pedal pulsation. Allow the brakes to cool naturally by driving for several minutes without heavy braking after the cycles are complete. This ensures maximum longevity and peak performance for your new EMPI hardware.
