PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP

1. Proper Orientation of the Offset Hole

The biggest mistake we see in the shop is installing offset padding backwards. The "thin" side of the foam should face the chassis or the exterior of the vehicle, while the "thick" side should face the driver or passenger. This allows you to tuck the roll bar closer to the roof or side panels of your VW while still providing the maximum amount of foam between your head and the steel bar. Always mock up the orientation before you secure it with zip ties to ensure you are getting the full safety benefit of the offset design.

2. Achieving Professional Mitered Joints

To give your sand rail or Baja Bug a professional, show-quality look, don''t just butt the ends of the padding together at a 90-degree corner. Use a sharp utility knife or a fine-tooth hacksaw blade to cut the ends at 45-degree angles. This creates a "mitered" joint that looks seamless and prevents gaps where the steel bar might be exposed. Once the angles are cut, you can use a small amount of black weatherstrip adhesive or high-strength electrical tape to join the seams for a factory-finished appearance that won''t shift during high-vibration off-roading.

3. Secure Mounting Without Slips

Even though this foam has a high-friction inner surface, it can still rotate on the bar over time, especially in high-heat environments. We recommend using heavy-duty UV-resistant zip ties every 6 to 8 inches. For a truly clean look, rotate the "head" of the zip tie toward the back of the bar so it isn''t visible from the seat. If you want a smoother finish, you can wrap the entire length of the padding in specialty roll bar tape or even heat-shrink tubing designed for roll bars; this protects the foam from physical snags and makes cleaning mud and dust off your cage much easier after a weekend at the track.
