OVERVIEW
When you are pushing high-voltage through a performance air-cooled engine, the rotor is the silent gatekeeper of your horsepower. The MSD 8470 Replacement Rotor is specifically engineered for the high-demand environments of Volkswagen performance, whether you are tearing up the dunes in a sand rail or cruising the strip in a vintage Beetle. Unlike standard ignition components that can fail under the stress of high-output CDI systems, this rotor is built to withstand the intense electrical energy produced by MSD 6-Series or 7-Series ignition boxes. It ensures that every bit of spark energy is delivered precisely to the spark plug terminals without leaking or dissipating, which is critical for maintaining engine timing and preventing misfires at high RPMs.
Crafted from high-quality, voltage-insulating material, this rotor is designed to resist carbon tracking, a common failure point in lesser components where electricity finds a path across the surface of the plastic rather than through the terminal. The rotor tip is constructed from low-resistance brass, providing maximum voltage transfer and superior durability against the corrosive effects of electrical arcing. For the air-cooled enthusiast who demands reliability in their Baja Bug, Bus, or Ghia, the MSD 8470 is an essential component for your ignition maintenance kit. Don''t let a worn-out rotor degrade your engine''s performance; upgrade to the precision and strength that only MSD can provide for your high-performance VW distributor.

PRO TIPS
1. Prevent Carbon Tracking with Proper Cleaning
When installing your new MSD 8470 rotor, always ensure the inside of the distributor cap is completely free of moisture and debris. Carbon tracking occurs when high voltage finds a path of least resistance across a dirty surface, effectively "burning" a trail into the plastic. Before seating the rotor, wipe down the distributor shaft and the interior of the cap with a clean, lint-free cloth. Using a tiny amount of dielectric grease on the rotor''s center contact point can help prevent corrosion, but never get grease on the brass tip that sweeps past the cap terminals, as this can impede the spark gap jump.
2. Check Your Rotor Phasing
In high-performance VW engines, especially those with aggressive timing curves or forced induction, rotor phasing is critical. Rotor phasing is the alignment between the rotor tip and the distributor cap terminal when the spark fires. If your timing is advanced or retarded significantly via a programmable ignition box, ensure the rotor tip is still centered on the cap terminal at the moment of discharge. If the gap is too wide, it forces the spark to jump a larger distance, increasing heat and wear on your new MSD 8470 rotor and potentially causing a cross-fire inside the cap.
3. Periodic Inspection for High-RPM Users
For those running their air-cooled VWs at high RPMs or in dusty off-road environments, we recommend inspecting the rotor every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Look for signs of "pitting" on the brass tip or a grayish oxidation layer. While brass is highly conductive, the constant arcing will eventually wear the material down. If the tip looks significantly eroded, replace it immediately. A fresh rotor ensures that your ignition system doesn''t have to work harder than necessary, which protects your ignition coil and spark plug wires from premature failure due to excessive resistance.
