EMPI Aluminum Power Pulley Kit with Threaded Hub and Belt
Unleash the hidden potential of your air-cooled engine with the EMPI Power Pulley Kit, a performance staple for Volkswagen enthusiasts looking to maximize rear-wheel horsepower. By reducing the diameter of the crank pulley to 5-3/4 inches, this kit effectively slows down the cooling fan and generator/alternator relative to the engine''s RPM. In a stock configuration, the oversized crank pulley forces the fan to spin at incredibly high speeds, which creates significant parasitic drag and consumes valuable horsepower. This power pulley recalibrates that ratio, freeing up energy that was previously wasted on moving air and allowing your Type 1 engine to rev more freely and deliver more punch during acceleration. Crafted from high-quality billet aluminum with a classic 5-hole design, this pulley doesn''t just improve performance; it adds a professional, high-performance aesthetic to your engine bay while reducing rotational mass.
Engineered for precision and longevity, this specific model features a threaded hub, utilizing the traditional Archimedes screw principle to keep oil inside your crankcase where it belongs. Unlike cheap smooth-hub pulleys that can struggle with oil seepage, the threaded design works in conjunction with the engine''s rotation to pump oil back away from the pulley seal, ensuring a dry and clean engine face. The kit is finished with high-visibility black timing marks etched into the polished aluminum surface, making ignition timing adjustments simple and accurate. Because a smaller diameter pulley requires a shorter belt than the factory original, Appletree Auto includes the specifically sized V-belt in this package, saving you the guesswork and ensuring a perfect fit right out of the box. Whether you are building a weekend street warrior, a dedicated drag racer, or a lightweight dune buggy, this EMPI Power Pulley kit is a mandatory upgrade for the performance-minded VW owner.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Specialist Team
1. Monitor Your Operating Temperatures Closely
While a power pulley is a fantastic way to gain horsepower, it is important to remember that it achieves this by spinning the cooling fan slower. On a high-performance street car or a racing engine, this is usually negligible; however, if you live in an extremely hot climate or frequently sit in heavy stop-and-go traffic, you must keep an eye on your Cylinder Head Temperatures (CHT) and Oil Temperature. We highly recommend installing a quality temperature gauge alongside this pulley to ensure your engine stays within the safe operating range, especially during the summer months or extended idling periods.
2. Ensure Proper Crankshaft Surface Preparation
Before sliding your new threaded EMPI pulley onto the crankshaft, take a moment to inspect the crank snout and the area where the oil return threads sit. Any old RTV silicone, carbon buildup, or burrs on the metal can prevent the threaded hub from functioning correctly or might even damage the aluminum threads of the pulley. Clean the area thoroughly with a lint-free rag and a bit of degreaser. When installing, apply a very light film of clean engine oil to the hub to ensure it slides on smoothly and seats perfectly against the woodruff key without galling the aluminum.
3. Master the Art of Shim Adjustment
Even though this kit includes the correct shortened belt, you still need to properly tension the system using the shims located on your generator or alternator pulley. Never "force" a belt on by prying it over the edge of the pulley, as this can stretch the internal cords and lead to premature belt failure or damage the aluminum flanges of your new power pulley. Add or remove shims between the two halves of the top pulley until you have about 1/2 inch of deflection in the belt. Remember to store any "extra" shims on the outside of the pulley under the nut so they are available if the belt stretches over time.
