OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the compression and oil control of your air-cooled engine, the quality of your piston rings is paramount. This 87mm Piston Ring Set is engineered specifically for the popular 1641cc big-bore upgrade, a favorite among Volkswagen enthusiasts looking for a slight displacement bump without the need for machine work on the engine case. These rings are manufactured to exacting tolerances to ensure a perfect seal against the cylinder walls, which is critical for maintaining peak horsepower and preventing the dreaded oil consumption that plagues tired engines. Whether you are performing a mid-season refresh or a complete top-end overhaul, these rings provide the reliability and longevity you expect from a high-performance air-cooled component. By utilizing a 1.5mm top ring, a 1.5mm second ring, and a robust 5mm oil control ring, this set offers the ideal balance of low friction and maximum sealing capability for your Type 1 based powerplant.
Installing a fresh set of rings is one of the most cost-effective ways to breathe new life into your Beetle, Bus, or Ghia. Over time, heat cycles and friction cause factory rings to lose their tension and wear down, leading to "blow-by," where combustion gases escape into the crankcase. This not only robs you of power but also contaminates your oil and increases internal engine pressure. This IAP/Grant replacement set is designed to seat quickly and effectively, providing a durable surface that stands up to the high operating temperatures inherent in air-cooled designs. Designed for 87mm pistons, this set is the industry standard for 1641cc slip-in kits, ensuring that your engine runs cooler, cleaner, and more efficiently. Don''t settle for subpar sealing when you can trust a proven ring set that has been a staple in the VW community for decades.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Verify Your Ring End Gap
Never assume that piston rings are "drop-in" ready without checking the end gap first. Even in a new set of cylinders, you must place each ring into the cylinder bore, square it up using a piston, and measure the gap with a feeler gauge. For a standard air-cooled VW street engine, a general rule of thumb is .004 inches of gap per inch of cylinder bore. If the gap is too tight, the ring ends will butt together as they expand from heat, leading to catastrophic cylinder wall damage or broken ring lands. If they are slightly over the minimum spec, it is generally safer than being too tight, but always aim for the manufacturer''s recommended specification for a 1641cc build.
2. Proper Ring Orientation and Staggering
Pay close attention to the markings on the rings; most compression rings will have a "Top" mark or a small dot indicating which side must face the combustion chamber. Installing a ring upside down will cause the engine to pump oil into the combustion chamber rather than scraping it away. Additionally, when installing the pistons into the cylinders, ensure that you stagger the ring gaps. You should never align the gaps in a straight vertical line. Instead, position the gaps approximately 120 to 180 degrees apart from each other. This creates a "labyrinth" seal that makes it much harder for combustion gases to bypass the rings, ensuring maximum cylinder pressure and power.
3. The Critical Break-In Procedure
The first 20 to 50 miles of an engine''s life are the most critical for piston ring seating. You should use a high-quality conventional (non-synthetic) break-in oil with high ZDDP (zinc) content to allow the rings to "wear-in" to the cylinder walls. Avoid long periods of idling, as low cylinder pressure won''t push the rings hard enough against the walls to seat them properly. Instead, drive the vehicle with varying RPMs and moderate loads. Use engine braking to create a vacuum in the cylinders, which helps pull oil up to lubricate the top rings while they seat. After the initial break-in period, change the oil to remove any microscopic metal particles shed during the seating process.
