OVERVIEW
When it is time to refresh your classic Volkswagen engine, the quality of your seal is what defines the longevity and power of your build. This 85.5mm Piston Ring Set is engineered specifically for the standard 1600cc air-cooled engine, providing the precise tension and oil control required to maintain peak compression. Manufactured by Grant, a name synonymous with reliability in the VW community, these rings are the go-to choice for enthusiasts performing a top-end refresh or a complete long-block overhaul. Whether you are cruising in a Beetle or hauling gear in a Transporter, these rings ensure that your combustion stays in the chamber and your oil stays in the crankcase, preventing the dreaded blue smoke and loss of power associated with worn-out components.
This comprehensive set is designed to fit standard cast 85.5mm pistons, which are the backbone of the 1600cc dual-port and single-port powerplants. The set includes a 1.75mm top compression ring, a 2mm second scraper ring, and a 5mm three-piece oil control ring for each of the four pistons. By utilizing high-grade materials that provide excellent heat dissipation and wear resistance, these rings seat quickly against the cylinder walls, creating a durable barrier that stands up to the high operating temperatures of an air-cooled environment. Don''t settle for inferior seals when rebuilding your flat-four; choose the kit that professional engine builders trust to keep their Volkswagens running cooler and stronger for thousands of miles to come.
FITMENT
This 85.5mm piston ring set is designed for standard 1600cc Aircooled VW Type 1 based engines. Please verify your piston groove widths before ordering, as some aftermarket performance pistons may use different thicknesses.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Check Your Ring End Gap
Never assume that rings are ready to install straight out of the box without verification. You must place each ring into its respective cylinder (use a piston to push it down about an inch so it stays square) and measure the end gap with a feeler gauge. For a standard 1600cc street engine, you are generally looking for an end gap of .012 inches to .018 inches. If the gap is too tight, the ring ends can touch as they expand from heat, leading to catastrophic engine failure. If the gap is slightly too large, you might lose a tiny bit of compression, but a gap that is too small will destroy your engine.
2. Proper Ring Orientation is Critical
When installing the rings onto the piston, pay close attention to the "Top" marks (often a small dot or the word "Top") stamped on the ring surface. These must face toward the combustion chamber. Additionally, you must "clock" your ring gaps so they do not align. A common practice is the 120-degree rule: position the top ring gap at 12 o''clock, the second ring gap at 4 o''clock, and the oil ring gap at 8 o''clock. This prevents "blow-by" where combustion gases or oil can leak through aligned gaps, ensuring your engine remains efficient and smoke-free.
3. Use a Ring Expander Tool
While it is tempting to use your fingers to spiral the rings onto the piston, this is the easiest way to accidentally snap a ring or, worse, create a microscopic stress fracture that will break later under load. Use a dedicated piston ring expander tool to gently spread the rings just enough to slide over the piston lands. This ensures the ring remains perfectly flat and retains its structural integrity. Also, ensure the piston grooves are meticulously cleaned of all carbon deposits before installation; if the ring cannot move freely in the groove, it will not seal properly against the cylinder wall.
