        OVERVIEW

If your classic air-cooled VW is suffering from a stumbling idle, hesitation under acceleration, or the dreaded "flat spot," it is time to stop ignoring that Solex carburetor and give it the attention it deserves. The EMPI 00-9936-0 Universal Carburetor Rebuild Kit is the ultimate solution for enthusiasts looking to restore factory-level performance to their original or aftermarket Solex, Brosol, or Bocar carburetors. Over time, modern ethanol-blended fuels wreak havoc on internal rubber components, causing diaphragms to stiffen and gaskets to shrink, which leads to vacuum leaks and inconsistent fuel delivery. This master rebuild kit provides everything you need to seal up those leaks and ensure your fuel-to-air ratio is dialed in perfectly, keeping your flat-four engine running cool and reliable.

What sets this EMPI kit apart is its versatile, universal nature, specifically designed to cover a wide range of PICT series carburetors. Whether you are running a 28PICT on a vintage 40hp engine, a 30PICT on a 1500cc, or the ubiquitous 34PICT-3 on a dual-port 1600cc, this kit includes the necessary gaskets, O-rings, and seals to get the job done right the first time. It features a high-quality needle and seat assembly to prevent flooding, a fresh accelerator pump diaphragm to eliminate off-the-line lag, and all the specialized fiber and copper washers required for a leak-free assembly. Instead of spending hundreds on a cheap "no-name" replacement carburetor that is difficult to tune, use this pro-grade kit to rebuild your high-quality German or Brazilian casting and maintain the authentic throttle response your Volkswagen was born with.

        PRO TIPS

        1. The Deep Clean is Non-Negotiable

When you have the carburetor disassembled, don''t just swap the parts and call it a day. The tiny internal passages, especially the pilot jet and the emulsion tube, can become clogged with "varnish" from old fuel. Use a dedicated carburetor cleaning dip or an ultrasonic cleaner to strip away every bit of debris. After soaking, use compressed air to blow out every single passage. If you can''t see light through a jet, it isn''t clean yet. Rebuilding a dirty carburetor with new gaskets is like putting clean socks on dirty feet; it won''t solve your performance issues.

        2. Check the Throttle Shaft for Play

Before you install your new gaskets, check the throttle shaft where it passes through the carburetor body. If you can wiggle the shaft up and down or side to side, you have a "vacuum leak at the source" that a rebuild kit alone cannot fix. While this kit includes basic seals, significant wear in the metal body will allow "unmetered air" to enter the engine, making it impossible to achieve a smooth idle. If your shaft is loose, you may need to have the body re-bushed or consider a new throttle body base in conjunction with this rebuild kit.

        3. Set Your Float Height and Accelerator Pump Stroke

Precision is key for a successful Solex rebuild. When installing the new needle and seat, always verify your float height. If the float is set too high, the engine will run rich and may flood; too low, and it will lean out during high-speed cruising. Additionally, once the kit is installed, adjust the accelerator pump linkage. You want a crisp, immediate "squirt" of fuel down the throat of the carb the moment the throttle arm moves. If there is a delay in that fuel shot, you''ll experience a stumble every time you pull away from a stop sign.
