Tip 1: Eliminate Stripped Slots. The biggest advantage of these EMPI plugs is the 22mm hex head. The original factory plugs featured a large flat-head screwdriver slot that was notorious for stripping or becoming seized. By switching to a hex head, you can use a standard socket or wrench, ensuring you can always remove the plugs during maintenance without damaging the hardware.

Tip 2: Replace Your Crush Washers. For a leak-free installation, never reuse the old gaskets. Always install these plugs with a fresh pair of aluminum or copper crush washers. Since the oil relief system is under constant pressure, a new washer is the only way to guarantee a proper seal against the engine case.

Tip 3: Verify Piston Movement. While you have the plugs and springs removed, use a magnet to pull out the oil relief pistons. Inspect them for any scoring or debris. Before reinstalling, ensure the pistons slide freely in their bores; a stuck piston can lead to dangerously high oil pressure that can blow out your oil cooler or insufficient pressure that can damage your bearings.
