Oil Drain Plate Cap Nut, 6mm, Sold Each

* Smaller diameter for easy tightening.
* Sold individually.
OVERVIEW
When it comes to maintaining the integrity of your vintage air-cooled Volkswagen engine, the smallest components often play the most critical roles. The oil drain plate is a primary service point for your VW, and ensuring a leak-free seal is paramount to the longevity of your flat-four. This 6mm cap nut is a premium replacement designed specifically for the oil strainer cover plate. Unlike standard hex nuts, the closed-end cap design prevents oil from seeping through the threads of the studs, providing an extra layer of protection against the common "VW drip." The smaller diameter of these specific nuts allows for much easier access with a socket or wrench, especially when working within the tight confines of the sump area or when using aftermarket deep sumps where clearance is at a premium.
Precision-engineered by EMPI, a leader in air-cooled performance and restoration parts, this 6mm cap nut is the professional choice for engine builders and weekend mechanics alike. Reusing old, rounded-off, or corroded hardware is a recipe for disaster, often leading to stripped case studs or improper torque application. By replacing your hardware during every oil screen cleaning or engine rebuild, you ensure that the pressure is evenly distributed across the drain plate and gaskets. These nuts are sold individually, allowing you to replace a single lost piece or refresh the entire set of six to give your engine case that clean, factory-finished look while maintaining a reliable, airtight seal for your lubrication system.
FITMENT

- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974

PRO TIPS
1. Observe Strict Torque Specifications
One of the most common mistakes in VW engine maintenance is over-tightening the oil drain plate nuts. The studs are threaded into a relatively soft magnesium or aluminum engine case. You should only tighten these 6mm nuts to approximately 5 foot-pounds (60 inch-pounds). Over-tightening will almost certainly pull the studs out of the case, necessitating a professional thread repair or "case-saver" installation. Use a calibrated inch-pound torque wrench to ensure even pressure across the plate without risking damage to your engine block.
2. Always Use New Copper Washers
A cap nut alone isn''t enough to stop a leak; it works in conjunction with a copper crush washer. Every time you remove the oil drain plate, you must replace the six small copper washers that sit beneath these nuts. These washers are designed to crush and deform slightly to create a liquid-tight seal against the plate. Reusing old, hardened copper washers is the leading cause of "mystery leaks" in the sump area. Ensure the surface of the plate is clean and flat before installing the new washers and nuts.
3. Check Stud Health During Installation
Before threading on your new cap nuts, take a moment to inspect the 6mm studs protruding from the engine case. If a stud feels loose or looks like it is backing out, do not attempt to tighten a nut onto it. Remove the stud, clean the threads, and use a small amount of blue thread-locker when re-seating it into the case. If the threads in the case are already stripped, you will need to address this before finishing your oil change. Installing fresh hardware like these EMPI cap nuts is the best time to perform a thorough inspection of the lower engine assembly.
