PRO TIPS
1. Master the Gasket Seal
When installing your mini sump, cleanliness is absolutely paramount. Ensure the engine case mating surface is completely free of old gasket material and oil residue before assembly. I always recommend using a very thin smear of a high-quality non-hardening sealant, such as Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket, on both sides of the paper gaskets. Be extremely careful not to over-torque the mounting nuts; the studs in the magnesium engine case are notoriously fragile. Tighten them in a cross-pattern to roughly 5-7 foot-pounds. Over-tightening won''t stop a leakit will only pull the studs out of the case or warp the aluminum sump plate.
2. Routine Filter Maintenance
Since this unit features a reusable filter, you should incorporate its cleaning into every single oil change. After draining the oil, remove the sump plate and extract the filter element. Clean it thoroughly using a solvent or a dedicated parts washer to remove any trapped metallic particles or sludge. Inspect the mesh for any tears or deformities. Before re-installing, ensure the filter is completely dry and free of solvent residue. This proactive maintenance ensures that your "mini-sump" continues to provide maximum filtration and flow throughout the life of your engine.
3. Check Your Oil Level Calibration
Remember that adding a mini sump changes the total oil capacity of your system. After the initial installation and first fill, run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the oil through the new filter and sump area. Shut the engine off, let it sit for five minutes so the oil can drain back down, and then check your dipstick. You will notice that it takes approximately a half-quart more than usual to reach the "Full" mark. I recommend marking your dipstick if the new level falls outside the factory range, though typically, you simply fill until the dipstick reads correctly, knowing you now have a larger safety margin of lubricant on board.
