009 Distributor, Vacuum Advance, with Electronic Ignition
* Includes vacuum advance.
* A common distributor for VW applications.
* Fits all Type 1 VW motors.
OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled engine''s performance and reliability with the Kuhltek Motorwerks 009-style distributor, featuring the perfect marriage of vacuum advance and integrated electronic ignition. For decades, the classic 009 centrifugal advance distributor has been the go-to for VW enthusiasts, but it often suffered from a notorious "flat spot" during initial acceleration. By adding a vacuum advance canister to this proven design, Kuhltek has eliminated that hesitation, providing a much smoother power transition and improved throttle response that makes daily driving a dream. This unit is specifically engineered to provide the aggressive timing curve needed for performance while maintaining the drivability and fuel economy benefits that only a vacuum-assisted system can offer.
Beyond the mechanical improvements, this distributor eliminates the biggest headache in vintage Volkswagen maintenance: the points and condenser. The pre-installed magnetic-pickup electronic ignition module replaces high-maintenance contact points with a solid-state system that never wears out, never needs gapping, and won''t succumb to "point float" at high RPMs. This means your timing stays rock-solid from the moment you set it, leading to easier cold starts, a more stable idle, and a cleaner burn across the entire power band. Whether you are cruising in a classic Beetle, pushing through the sand in a dune buggy, or hauling the family in a vintage Bus, this distributor is the ultimate "set it and forget it" ignition solution for your Type 1 upright engine.
FITMENT
This distributor is designed for 12-volt systems and fits most Type 1 based air-cooled engines. Please note that the vacuum advance canister may interfere with some high-performance dual-carburetor linkages or specific oversized fan shrouds.
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1979 (All Type 1 engines)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
- Volkswagen Bus / Type 2: 1950 through 1971 (Upright engines only)
- Volkswagen Thing: 1973 through 1974
- VW Based Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: All models using Type 1 engine cases
- Note: Requires a carburetor with a vacuum port for full functionality

PRO TIPS
1. Coil Compatibility and Resistance
When switching to an electronic ignition distributor, coil selection is critical for longevity. We strongly recommend using a high-quality 12-volt coil with a primary resistance of at least 3.0 Ohms (such as the classic Blue Coil). Using a low-resistance performance coil or a racing coil designed for CD ignition can cause the electronic module to overheat and fail prematurely. Always double-check your coil''s resistance with a multimeter before the final installation to ensure you aren''t sending too much current through the distributor''s internal module.
2. Precise Vacuum Connection
To take full advantage of the vacuum advance feature, ensure your vacuum line is connected to a "ported" vacuum source on your carburetor, rather than a direct manifold vacuum source. Ported vacuum is located just above the throttle plates, meaning the distributor only receives a vacuum signal when the throttle is cracked open. This prevents excessive advance at idle while providing the necessary "kick" during acceleration. If you are running aftermarket dual carburetors that lack a vacuum port, you can still run this distributor, but you must cap the vacuum canister to prevent debris from entering, and it will function solely on the mechanical advance curve.
3. Static vs. Dynamic Timing
Unlike traditional points-based distributors, you cannot easily "static" time an electronic distributor with a simple test light. While you can get it close enough to start the engine by aligning the rotor to the #1 cylinder notch on the housing at Top Dead Center (TDC), you MUST use a timing light for the final adjustment. We recommend setting the timing to approximately 28 to 32 degrees of total advance at 3,500 RPM with the vacuum line disconnected and plugged. Once the mechanical advance is set, reconnect the vacuum line to enjoy the added drivability benefits during part-throttle cruising.
