OVERVIEW
When it comes to the heart of your Volkswagen Type 4 engine, the valvetrain is where performance and longevity are won or lost. These premium solid lifters are engineered to provide the precise lift and duration your camshaft demands, ensuring that your 1700cc, 1800cc, or 2000cc powerplant runs with the smooth, rhythmic efficiency that air-cooled enthusiasts crave. Unlike hydraulic lifters that can be prone to "bleeding down" or failing at higher RPMs, these mechanical solid lifters offer a direct, uncompromising connection between the cam lobe and the pushrod. This results in more accurate valve timing and the classic mechanical sound that signifies a perfectly tuned VW engine. Whether you are restoring a classic 411 or keeping a mid-seventies Transporter on the road, these lifters provide the structural integrity required to withstand the high heat and friction environment of the Type 4 case.
Replacing your lifters is an essential step during any top-end refresh or complete engine overhaul, and it is a task that should never be overlooked. Reusing old lifters on a new camshaft, or even putting worn lifters back into a high-mileage engine, is a recipe for premature cam failure and catastrophic engine damage. These lifters are manufactured to exacting tolerances, featuring a precision-ground face that allows for the necessary rotation during operation to prevent localized wear. Specifically designed for Type 4 applications used in 1972 through 1977 Type 2 Buses and 1971 through 1974 Type 4 sedans and wagons, these components are the gold standard for stock-style rebuilds. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that "good enough" isn''t in a VW specialist''s vocabulary, which is why we offer these high-quality lifters to ensure your engine build stands the test of time and miles.

PRO TIPS
1. The Golden Rule of Camshaft Installation
Never, under any circumstances, install used lifters on a new camshaft or new lifters on a used camshaft. The lifter face and the cam lobe develop a unique "mate" during the initial break-in period. If you mix old and new components, the hardened surfaces will fight each other, leading to "wiped" cam lobes and metal shavings circulating through your oil galleries in as little as 500 miles. Always purchase a full set of eight new lifters whenever you are installing a new camshaft to protect your investment and ensure a long engine life.
2. Critical Break-In Procedure
To ensure these lifters seat properly against the camshaft, you must use a high-quality assembly lube (preferably a moly-based paste) on the face of each lifter during installation. Once the engine is fired for the first time, do not let it idle. Immediately bring the RPM up to between 2,000 and 2,500 and hold it there for 20 minutes. This ensures that enough oil is splashing off the crankshaft to lubricate the cam-to-lifter interface while the components "work-harden" together. We also highly recommend using a dedicated break-in oil with high ZDDP (zinc and phosphorus) content for the first 500 miles.
3. Inspection of the Lifter Bores
Before sliding your new lifters into the Type 4 case, take a moment to meticulously inspect and clean the lifter bores. Over time, heat cycles can cause minor burrs or carbon buildup in the bores. A new lifter should slide in smoothly and rotate freely by hand. If there is any resistance or "sticking," it can prevent the lifter from rotating during engine operation, which will lead to flat spots and rapid wear. Use a lint-free cloth and clean engine oil to prep the bores, and verify that there is no excessive side-to-side play, which could indicate a worn engine case that requires machining.
