* Manufactured by EMPI.
* Sold individually.
OVERVIEW
When you are behind the wheel of a classic air-cooled Volkswagen, the ignition switch is the critical bridge between your hand and the roaring engine behind you. Over decades of service, the internal copper contacts and spring mechanisms within the original factory switch begin to fatigue, oxidize, and eventually fail. This often manifests as a car that refuses to start, accessories that flicker intermittently, or a key that fails to spring back from the ''start'' position to the ''run'' position. Replacing your worn-out electrical component with this premium EMPI ignition switch ensures that your Beetle maintains peak electrical integrity, providing the reliable starting power and consistent voltage flow that your ignition system demands. Don''t let a failing five-dollar part leave you stranded at the gas station or force you to perform the dreaded ''key jiggle'' just to get your dash lights to illuminate.
Engineered to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, this ignition switch (OEM part number 111-905-865K) is designed specifically for the transition years of the Type 1 Beetle. As a master air-cooled specialist, I have seen countless enthusiasts struggle with aftermarket switches that don''t quite line up or have weak internal detents; however, this EMPI unit offers a crisp, mechanical feel that mimics the factory German quality you expect. It is a direct plug-and-play replacement that installs into the back of your steering column lock cylinder housing. Whether you are performing a full ground-up restoration or simply maintaining your daily driver, upgrading to this fresh switch is one of the most cost-effective ways to modernize the reliability of your VW''s electrical backbone and ensure your classic stays on the road for years to come.
FITMENT
This ignition switch is designed for the following Volkswagen models:
- VW Beetle (Type 1): 1971, 1972, 1973, and early 1974 (through mid-year production).
- VW Super Beetle (Type 1): 1971, 1972, 1973, and early 1974.
- Note: Please verify your production date for 1974 models, as Volkswagen transitioned to a different switch style mid-way through the 1974 production year.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Disconnect the Battery First
Before you even touch the steering column, you must disconnect the negative battery cable. The main power wire feeding the ignition switch is a direct, un-fused line from the battery (usually a thick red wire). If you accidentally ground this terminal against the metal steering column or the dash while swapping the switch, you will cause a massive electrical short that can melt your entire wiring harness in seconds. Safety is paramount when working with 50-year-old Volkswagen electrical systems, so always isolate the power source before starting the job.
2. Master the Hidden Grub Screw
The ignition switch is held into the metal lock housing by a very small, often overlooked flathead grub screw. This screw is located on the side of the housing and is frequently covered in decades of dust and grime. You do not need to remove the entire steering column to replace this switch, but you do need a precision screwdriver to back out that tiny screw. Be extremely careful not to drop or lose this screw, as finding a replacement at a local hardware store is nearly impossible due to its specialized thread pitch and diminutive size.
3. Use Dielectric Grease for Longevity
While this switch is brand new, the wiring harness plug in your Beetle is likely decades old. Before plugging your harness into the new EMPI switch, inspect the female terminals for any signs of green corrosion or melting. Clean the terminals with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner, and then apply a small dab of dielectric grease to the pins. This grease doesn''t just improve connectivity; it seals out moisture and prevents future oxidation, ensuring that your new switch doesn''t suffer from the high-resistance heat cycles that typically kill these components over time.
