OVERVIEW
When it comes to the electrical integrity of your vintage Volkswagen, there is no room for compromise. The EMPI Air-Cooled VW Fuse Kit is an essential addition to any enthusiast''s toolbox or glove box, providing a comprehensive solution for the notorious "torpedo style" ceramic fuses that these classic machines rely on. Over decades of service, original fuses can become brittle, oxidized, or simply fatigued, leading to intermittent electrical failures, dimming lights, or even dangerous overheating at the fuse block. This kit ensures that you have the exact amperage ratings required to protect your wiring harness from over-current situations, keeping your Beetle, Bus, or Ghia running safely and reliably under all driving conditions.
This 20-piece assortment is specifically curated to cover the most common circuits found in the air-cooled lineup. Whether you are chasing a ghost in your turn signal circuit or refreshing the entire fuse panel during a restoration, having the correct color-coded fuses on hand is a lifesaver. EMPI has designed these fuses to meet strict tolerances, ensuring they pop when they are supposed to while maintaining a solid connection during normal operation. Don''t find yourself stranded on the side of the road or a dark trail because of a five-cent part; this kit provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing your electrical system is shielded by fresh, high-quality components designed for the unique demands of the VW electrical architecture.
FITMENT
This fuse kit is compatible with virtually all vintage air-cooled Volkswagen models and many European classics that utilize the GBC-style ceramic/torpedo fuses. Specific fitment includes:

PRO TIPS
1. Clean Your Terminals Before Installation
Installing a brand-new fuse into a dirty or oxidized fuse block is a recipe for failure. Before you pop in one of these new EMPI fuses, use a small brass wire brush or a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to lightly scuff the copper contact points on the fuse holder. This removes the green or white oxidation that builds up over the years, ensuring a low-resistance connection. A high-resistance connection generates heat, which can melt the fuse holder or cause the fuse to blow prematurely even if there isn''t an actual short in the system.
2. Never "Over-Fuse" a Circuit
It can be tempting to put a 16-amp red fuse into a slot meant for an 8-amp white fuse if you keep blowing the smaller one. Don''t do it. The fuse is the weakest link in the system by design to protect your expensive and hard-to-replace wiring harness. If an 8-amp fuse blows, it means there is an issue in that circuit. Installing a higher-rated fuse allows more current to flow than the wires were designed to handle, which can lead to the insulation melting and, in the worst-case scenario, an electrical fire under your dashboard.
3. Check the Tension of the Metal Tabs
VW fuse blocks are notorious for the metal "fingers" losing their tension over forty or fifty years. When you have the fuse out, gently squeeze the two metal contact tabs toward each other to ensure they provide a tight, snapping grip on the tapered ends of the new fuse. If the fuse can be spun easily with your finger after installation, it is too loose. A loose fuse causes "arcing," which creates immense heat and will eventually char the fuse block. A nice, tight fit ensures consistent voltage delivery to your headlights and ignition system.
