OVERVIEW
In the high-stakes world of air-cooled Volkswagen engines, heat is the ultimate enemy. Every component of your VW''s cooling system must work in perfect harmony to ensure your engine doesn''t suffer from premature wear or catastrophic failure. These Front Cylinder Deflector Tins for the right side (passenger side on US models) are absolutely critical components of that cooling ecosystem. Often referred to as "baffle tins" or "lower cylinder tins," these pieces are designed to sit directly under the main cylinder shroud on the pulley side of the engine. Their primary job is to catch the high-velocity air being pushed down from the fan shroud and redirect it around the base of the cylinders and heads, ensuring that the critical areas near the crank pulley remain within safe operating temperatures. Without these deflectors, air escapes prematurely, leaving hot spots that can lead to dropped valve seats or warped cylinders.
Manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, these tins feature a durable black finish that resists the harsh environment of an engine bay. Whether you are performing a concourse-level restoration on a vintage Split Window Bus or simply refreshing the cooling system on your daily driver Beetle, these deflectors are a non-negotiable part of the assembly. Many builders make the mistake of leaving these out during a rebuild because they are "fussy" to install once the engine is fully assembled, but at Appletree Automotive, we know that skipping these small pieces of sheet metal can reduce the lifespan of your cylinders by thousands of miles. This specific unit is designed for the right side (cylinders 1 and 2) and provides the necessary tension to help hold the larger upper cylinder tins firmly in place, reducing engine vibration and unwanted rattling.
FITMENT
This right-side front cylinder deflector tin is designed for Type 1 based air-cooled engines (1300cc to 1600cc). Please verify your engine configuration before ordering.
- VW Beetle: 1961 through 1977 (Standard and Super Beetle)
- VW Karmann Ghia: 1961 through 1974

PRO TIPS
1. Install Before the Main Shrouds
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is trying to install these deflector tins after the main cylinder shrouds and intake manifolds are already bolted down. For a frustration-free experience, always clip these deflectors onto the cylinder studs or position them correctly before you lower the large top tins into place. This ensures that the tabs on the deflector tin align perfectly with the slots in the upper tinware, creating a tight seal that prevents cooling air from leaking out of the sides. If you try to "stuff" them in later, you risk bending the metal and creating a gap that defeats the purpose of the cooling system.
2. Check for Pushrod Tube Clearance
Because these tins sit so close to the base of the cylinders, it is vital to check for clearance against your pushrod tubes. During installation, ensure the edges of the tin are not rubbing directly against the tubes, as engine vibration can eventually chafe through the metal, leading to oil leaks. If you find the fitment is too tight, you can slightly "massage" or bend the edges of the stamped steel for a custom fit. Remember, a well-placed piece of tin should never be under extreme stress; it should snap into place and stay there securely without putting pressure on the surrounding engine components.
3. Paint and Prep for Longevity
While these tins come with a black finish, the underside (the side facing the road) is constantly bombarded by road debris, moisture, and salt. If you live in a coastal area or a climate with harsh winters, we recommend adding an extra layer of high-heat engine enamel or a ceramic coating before installation. Additionally, before you snap them in, ensure that the cylinder fins are completely clean of old grease and dirt. Even the best deflector tin in the world won''t help much if the air can''t actually reach the metal surface of the cylinder because it''s blocked by a layer of baked-on oil and grime.
