EMPI Dual Quiet Exhaust System for VW Type 1
Vehicle Fitment and Compatibility
This EMPI Dual Quiet Exhaust System (Part # 00-3648-0) is engineered for the Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle and Karmann Ghia. It is specifically designed to fit 1300cc to 1600cc upright engines for model years 1966 through 1973. This precision-designed system features 1 3/8-inch primary tubing and uses the standard small 3-bolt muffler flange configuration, making it one of the most popular performance upgrades for air-cooled VW owners seeking a balance of flow and sound control.
Product Features and Specifications
The kit comes complete with a header, dual quiet mufflers, and flared chrome exhaust tips for a classic look. To ensure a comprehensive installation, Appletree includes the necessary aluminum flex hoses and a hardware installation kit. Note that this specific model is finished in raw steel. The thin black coating found on the pipes is intended for rust prevention during shipping and storage only; it is not a permanent high-temperature finish and will burn off during initial operation.
Pro Tech Tips for Your Exhaust Installation
Tip 1: Prep and Paint the Raw Steel. Since this system arrives in raw steel, the storage paint will smoke and peel once the engine reaches operating temperature. For the best results and to prevent corrosion, we recommend stripping the storage paint with a solvent and applying a high-quality, high-temperature header paint or ceramic coating before final assembly.
Tip 2: Test Fit Before Final Tightening. To ensure perfect alignment with your rear apron and bumper brackets, loosely install all header nuts and muffler bolts first. Once the mufflers are positioned evenly and clear all bodywork, tighten the system starting from the cylinder heads and working your way back to the muffler flanges.
Tip 3: Re-Torque After Heat Cycles. New exhaust gaskets will compress significantly after they have been exposed to engine heat. After your first few drives, allow the engine to cool completely and re-torque the header nuts and the 3-bolt flange hardware to prevent leaks and ensure the longevity of your gaskets.
