PRO TIPS
1. Manage Your Fuel Pressure
One of the most common mistakes when installing EMPI EPC 34 or similar Weber-style carburetors is over-pressurizing the needle and seat. These carburetors are designed to operate optimally between 1.5 and 2.5 PSI. Most stock fuel pumps, and certainly most electric pumps, will push well over 4 PSI, which can lead to flooding, erratic idling, and fuel leaking from the top of the carb. We highly recommend installing a high-quality fuel pressure regulator between the pump and the "T" fitting to ensure you don''t overwhelm the floats. This single step will save you hours of tuning frustration.
2. Use a Sync Tool for Perfection
While you can get the engine running by "ear," you will never achieve a perfect idle or crisp off-idle transition without a synchronization tool, often called a "Snail" or Uni-Syn gauge. Since dual carburetors operate on independent linkages, it is vital that both carburetors are drawing the exact same volume of air at idle. When adjusting your hex bar, ensure there is no tension on the arms at idle; the linkage should "click" into place only after the idle speed screws are set. If one carb is pulling more air than the other, the engine will fight itself, leading to increased vibration and heat.
3. Check for Vacuum Leaks at the Base
Type 4 engines are notorious for being sensitive to vacuum leaks at the intake manifold base. Before you bolt everything down, ensure the mounting surfaces on the cylinder heads are perfectly clean and flat. We recommend a light smear of high-temperature sealant on the gaskets to ensure a 100% airtight seal. Additionally, after your first few heat cycles, go back and re-torque the manifold nuts. The expansion and contraction of the aluminum can cause things to loosen slightly, and a tiny vacuum leak can make it impossible to get your idle mixture screws adjusted correctly.
