This EMPI installation kit is designed for Volkswagen Type 1, 2, and 3 engines featuring a dual port configuration. It is specifically engineered for 1500cc and 1600cc engines using stock-style intake manifolds. This kit is compatible with the following models:

• VW Beetle and Super Beetle: 1971-1979
• VW Karmann Ghia: 1971-1974
• VW Bus (Type 2): 1971
• VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1971-1973

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

Use a Lubricant for Easy Assembly: Urethane boots are significantly more durable than standard rubber, but their rigidity can make them difficult to slide onto the intake tubes. Apply a light film of soapy water or silicone-based lubricant to the inside of the boots. This allows them to slide into position easily without the risk of tearing the material or struggling with alignment.

Optimize Clamp Placement: To ensure a vacuum-tight seal, center the stainless steel clamps over the joint where the intake manifold meets the end casting. Tighten the clamps until the boot can no longer be rotated by hand. Do not over-tighten, as excessive force can eventually cut into the urethane or distort the intake tube, leading to air leaks.

Diagnose Potential Vacuum Leaks: After completing the installation, start the engine and let it reach operating temperature. If you experience a high or surging idle, spray a small amount of carburetor cleaner around the edges of the boots. If the engine RPM changes, it indicates an air leak. The urethane construction in this kit is highly resistant to fuel and heat, offering a much longer service life than traditional rubber boots which tend to crack and leak over time.
