PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
Tip 1: Verify Your Spline Length Before Installation
Before you tear down your rear end, double-check that you actually have "Short Spline" axles. A common mistake in the air-cooled world is misidentifying the axle year, especially on buggies that have seen multiple engine and transaxle swaps. Short spline axles are generally found on 1966 and earlier Beetles (and some 1967 models). If the threaded portion of your axle and the splined area are shorter than the later 1968+ versions, you are in the right place. Installing a short-spline kit on a long-spline axle will result in the hub not seating correctly, which can lead to catastrophic failure of the axle nut and wheel assembly. Always measure twice to ensure a safe fit.
Tip 2: Prep Your Rotors and Check Your Seals
Brand new rotors come coated in a thin layer of shipping oil or cosmoline to prevent rust while they sit in the warehouse. Before you install your calipers and pads, use a high-quality brake cleaner to thoroughly degrease the rotor surfaces. If you don''t, you will contaminate your new pads immediately, leading to poor braking performance and "glazing." Additionally, since you already have the hubs off, this is the perfect time to replace your rear axle seals and O-rings. A leaking axle seal will dump gear oil directly onto your new disc brakes, ruining your stopping power and making a massive mess of your new investment.
Tip 3: Optimize Your Master Cylinder for Disc Brakes
When switching from drums to discs, you are changing the volume of fluid required to move the pistons. If you are still running a stock, small-bore master cylinder designed for four-wheel drums, you might find that your pedal feels "low" or soft. We highly recommend upgrading to a 20.6mm or larger dual-circuit master cylinder to ensure you have enough fluid displacement to actuate the new calipers effectively. Also, since this kit does not include an emergency brake, consider installing a hydraulic line lock if you need a way to hold the vehicle temporarily on an incline while off-roading.
