1. Master Cylinder Matching is Critical
Because this kit utilizes powerful 4-piston calipers, you are moving significantly more fluid than a standard single-piston or drum setup. To get the best pedal feel and prevent a ''mushy'' response, we strongly recommend upgrading to a larger bore master cylinder. A 2-lb residual pressure valve may also be beneficial if your master cylinder is mounted lower than your calipers, such as in many custom sand rail configurations. Always ensure your hydraulic system is fully bled using high-quality DOT 4 fluid to handle the higher temperatures these brakes can generate.
2. Proper Bedding of Hawk Pads
To achieve maximum stopping power and prevent rotor warping, you must properly bed in the Hawk brake pads included in this kit. This process involves a series of controlled stops from 35-45 MPH down to 5 MPH, followed by a series of harder stops from 50-55 MPH. Never come to a complete stop with your foot held firmly on the pedal during this process, as it can cause uneven pad material transfer. Allowing the brakes to cool completely after the bedding cycle ensures the friction material is properly cured to the vented rotor surface.
3. Torque and Spline Maintenance
When installing the replaceable splined centers, it is vital to use a high-quality anti-seize lubricant on the axle splines to prevent galling. Given the high-torque nature of the vehicles this kit is designed for, we recommend checking the torque on your axle nuts after the first few hours of hard use. The 7075 billet is incredibly tough, but maintaining the proper preload on the axle nut is what prevents the splines from working against each other. Periodically inspect the 14mm studs for any signs of stretching if you are running heavy, oversized off-road tires in high-traction conditions.
