OVERVIEW
When you are pushing your sand rail, dune buggy, or vintage dragster to the limit, the last thing you want to worry about is a wheel bearing failure caused by sand ingestion or grease starvation. The Appletree Automotive King Pin Sealed Bearing Kit is specifically engineered for enthusiasts running high-performance aluminum spindle mount rims on traditional king pin and link pin front ends. Unlike standard automotive bearings that rely on messy grease packs and external seals that can easily be breached by fine desert silt or track debris, these sealed units offer a maintenance-free, high-durability solution. By utilizing an integrated synthetic rubber seal, these bearings lock in high-temperature lubricant while keeping contaminants out, ensuring that your front wheels spin freely and consistently through every turn and jump.
This kit is the gold standard for builders who demand precision and reliability in their front-end assembly. Transitioning to aluminum spindle mount wheels significantly reduces unsprung weight, providing sharper steering response and improved suspension travel, but it also necessitates a bearing setup that matches that level of performance. This four-piece kit provides everything you need to outfit a pair of aluminum hubs, featuring two inner and two outer bearings designed for a snug, precision fit on standard VW king pin spindles. Whether you are building a show-quality buggy or a rugged off-road beast, these bearings eliminate the guesswork and provide the smooth, friction-reduced rotation necessary for a competitive edge. Don''t settle for inferior, open-cage bearings when you can upgrade to a sealed system that is built to withstand the rigors of the most demanding environments.
FITMENT
This bearing kit is designed specifically for use with aluminum spindle mount wheels on the following applications:
- VW King Pin / Link Pin Front Ends: Fits all standard Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia front ends from 1946 through 1965.
- Custom Sand Rails and Dune Buggies: Ideal for any chassis utilizing a King Pin style beam and spindles.
- Aluminum Spindle Mount Rims: Compatible with Douglas, Real, and other popular aluminum wheels designed for spindle mounting without a separate brake drum or hub.
- Drag Racing Applications: Perfect for lightweight "Gasser" style builds or rail dragsters using VW-based front suspension components.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Press-In Technique is Vital
When installing these bearings into your aluminum spindle mount rims, never apply pressure directly to the inner race or the rubber seal. Aluminum hubs expand and contract differently than steel, so a precision fit is tight. Always use a bearing driver or a socket that matches the diameter of the outer race only. Applying pressure to the inner race during installation can "brinell" the bearing, creating small indentations in the raceway that will lead to premature noise and failure. If the fit is exceptionally tight, you can place the bearings in the freezer for an hour and gently warm the aluminum hub with a heat gun to allow for a smoother "shrink-fit" installation.
2. Inspect Your Spindles for Burrs
Before sliding your new bearing-equipped wheels onto the spindles, take a moment to inspect the spindle surfaces where the bearings will sit. Because these are precision-fit sealed units, any nicks, burrs, or rust scaling on the spindle can prevent the wheel from seating properly or, worse, gall the inner race of your new bearings. Use a fine-grit emery cloth to polish the spindle snouts until they are smooth and bright. Apply a very light film of anti-seize or assembly lube to the spindle surface to prevent "cold welding" and to ensure that the wheels can be easily removed for future maintenance or tire changes.
3. Don''t Over-Tighten the Spindle Nut
One of the most common mistakes with sealed bearings is treating them like old-school tapered roller bearings. Tapered bearings require a specific "pre-load," but these radial sealed bearings are designed to have a specific internal clearance. When you tighten your spindle nut, you should tighten it just enough to remove all side-play from the wheel, but no further. Over-tightening can put excessive lateral load on the ball bearings, which they aren''t designed to handle, leading to rapid heat buildup and seal failure. Always ensure your cotter pin or locking nut is properly secured after finding that "sweet spot" where the wheel spins freely with zero axial movement.
